Red Wings pick Julius Vahatalo in 6th round, 166th overall

The Red Wings picked massive 6'5" but super-skinny 163-pound winger Julius Vahatalo, from TPS Turku's junior system, with the 166th overall pick. Vahalato was unlisted in draft rankings. [edit: EliteProspects has him listed at 191 pounds]

Quoth RedWingsCentral:

6-166. LW Julius Vahatalo, 6-5, 191, 18-3-0-3-0, TPS Turku (FIN). Passed over in the 2013 draft, Vahatalo put up big numbers at the Finnish Jr. A level — 18 goals among 39 points in 33 games — while appearing in 18 games at the SM-Liiga level and scoring three times. Standing 6-foot-5 and 191 pounds, he instantly becomes one of the Red Wings’ biggest prospects.

Just curious George, who did Nill pick in the first round, and was it to fill a positional need?

The Stars went with Julius Honka, a very talented but small Finnish defenseman. He’s listed at 5’7” and 180. Optimistically.

Nill drafted a smallish defenseman but followed in 3rd round with bruising stay at home D-Man.

This Finn will be our ice cop someday but after a few penalties he’ll get sent to GR and eventually waived.

I love the twelve fans in the stands in the first video. It must seem ridiculous to score a goal and hear that almost inaudible clapping sound.

Almqvist left GR for the KHL because they didn’t think he had the ability to play “heavy.”  Ben Marshall is a mite 5’9”, 185 lbs. rearguard currently in his last year at the University of Minnesota.  I wonder if this trend towards bigger defensemen with puck-moving skills is gonna affect his chances with the Wings.

“How about a nice, greasy pork sandwich served in a dirty ashtray.”

Seriously, whatever they’re feeding him in Finland just ain’t gonna cut it in a league that has 6’5”, 250 lbs behemoths hitting each other into the dashers.

The thing about being a 6’5,” 191-pound guy in Finland is this: he might be skinny for his size, but Finland’s Liiga is a ROUGH AND TUMBLE league—there are suspensions for vicious checks, there are regular fights, there are predatory players who just blast people into next week—so Vahatalo has to hold his own.
