The Malik Report

MLive's Ansar Khan penned a story about the Wings' faceoff woes, noting that the Wings haven't finished lower than 10th place in faceoffs since the 97-98 season...
“When you get beat like we did the way we did, I’ve been here a long time, but if you can dig up a game when we’ve been that bad at home (in the faceoff circle), … ’’ coach Mike Babcock said. “I understand sometimes in the first period you get fed your lunch and you respond, but it was like that all night long. We lost the first seven draws in own zone. To me, that’s intensity and being prepared. As a coach you didn’t do a very good job. It’s up to you to get your team ready to play. We weren’t ready to play, we didn’t play hard enough, we were foolish in the way we played, we weren’t relentless. Go through the whole thing and it was a tough day.’’
The Red Wings (2-2-0) and Flyers (1-4-0) are tied for 19th in the NHL in faceoff percentage (49.1 percent).
It was a particularly rough night for Stephen Weiss. In addition to his minus-4 rating, he won only 5-of-21 faceoffs (23.8 percent).
“When you lose a lot of draws like that you’re chasing the puck a lot of the times,’’ Weiss said. “You have to either get it back right away or you’re going to be chasing it for that shift. Obviously, they did a good job. but we have to find away, especially myself, to snap a few more back. We have to get some more help from the wingers, but we definitely lost too many.’’
No. 2 star: Anthony Mantha, Val-d'Or Foreurs (QMJHL)
Does the Detroit Red Wings first-round pick have a standing reservation in Friday's 3 Stars? Mantha (2G-3A, +3) led Val-d'Or to a 6-4 home win over Drummondville by notching five points. The 19-year-old was a two-way force, scoring a short-handed goal in the second period while also feeding Anthony Richard for a clinching goal with 31 seconds left in the game. Mantha's pair of markers gave him a Quebec League-leading 13 in just eight games, along with a league-best 23 points.
And I will let you judge Dmitry Chesnokov's report about Ruslan Salei's family employing a psychic as part of a Russian TV show on your own.
This is it for me. You won't hear from me until Sunday morning, middle-of-the-night-ish time, due to the wedding. Wish Mark and the rest of us luck!
