Red Wings prospects Anthony Mantha and Jake Paterson are heading to Lake Placid, New York today as Hockey Canada's World Junior Selection camp team (which Mantha and Paterson are part of) will spend the next five days battling WJC selection camp teams representing the U.S., Finland and Sweden.
Paterson's considered something of a long-shot candidate to represent Canada at the WJC in Malmo, Sweden in December, but the Saginaw Spirit goalie insisted that he'd much prefer missing the Spirit's outdoor game at Comerica Park for the sake of playing for his country, and MLive's Brendan Savage took note of Paterson's comments:
"That would be pretty cool," Paterson said. "I guess it's a win-win when it comes to December. There's a lot to look forward to this year."
Paterson got a taste of the world juniors last year, when he was Canada's No. 3 goalie. Although he didn't see any playing time in Russia, the experience provided added motivation to make the team again this year.
"It would be unbelievable," Paterson said. "I'm looking forward to getting the No. 1 job but a lot can change. It was a pretty cool experience. I definitely learned a lot even though I didn't get any playing time – how the tournament works, seeing how Hockey Canada treats their players. It was unbelievable."
Paterson got some prep work for the world junior development camp by taking part in the Red Wings Development Camp in Traverse City last month. It was his second straight year at the Red Wings camp, where prospects are tutored in what it takes to become a professional hockey player.
"It definitely helps a lot," the 6-foot-2, 183-pound Paterson said. "There's a lot of great shooters and a lot great instructors. It's definitely an advantage."
Savage continues and offers Paterson's comments about a short period of time spent as a "Black Ace" during the Wings' playoff run, but it turns out that some significant news regarding the Wings' prospect tournament (from September 5-9) and main training camp (from September 12-17) in Traverse City, MI just popped up, from the Wings camps' official Twitter account:
And if you want to watch the Wings' prospects take part in ECHL games, the Toledo Walleye announced that single-game tickets will go on sale this Saturday, August 10th at 11 AM.
