Red Wings make an odd move to free space for Danny DeKeyser, send Brian Lashoff to GR

The Detroit Red Wings had to make room for Danny DeKeyser on their 23-man roster, but they did not do so by sending Gustav Nyquist down to Grand Rapids:

Lashoff will probably play in the Grifins' Tuesday night game in Houston before returning to Detroit on Wednesday, when the Wings no longer have to worry about the 23-man roster limit. And yes, this does mean that DeKeyser may play tomorrow vs. Colorado, though Carlo Colaicovo may play instead...

Maybe this also makes Lashoff eligible for AHL playoffs ? Not sure how that works.

I would imagine that Jared Coreau, the UFA goalie from Northern Michigan, will also be signed by the Red Wings after the trade deadline passes and the roster can expand. The interesting question will be whether or not he stays with the team like DeKeyser, or goes to GR on a pro tryout contract like Sheahan did last season after inking with the Wings. If he stays, while less than ideal then at least there will be another option in net than Gustavsson.

Need Nyquist for tomorrow without Sammy and Hank. Lash will be back on Wednesday.

if anything Mrazek is coming up and Coreau would go to GR.  But Gus is under contract, one way, there’s no way we don’t finish the season with him.

How exactly is this an odd move, considering we lost 2 forwards today?

I was late to the Rout today, what happened to Nyquist? Did he really get scratched for the Useless Sammy???  Is there a Complacency buyout in the new CBA?  Wings can jump on that like a Hen on Junebug!!!

KH is in a tough spot with not many sellers and not much to sell.

The Road game with the Avs just got a lot tougher and MUST WIN!

Holland can sell lots of players but he won’t because he’s too loyal and he believes that they still have a shot at the cup.  He’s right.  If the good teams start sucking, the Wings have a great shot.

No, if the good teams start sucking then the Wings have an outside shot, because they need to start scoring goals if they want to win playoff games.

I blame the Kings for Holland’s overt optimism. Just getting in has been his mantra, and the Kings last year and the Flyers the year before showed that barely making it in can be enough to get you to the end.

The more I think about this game the more pissed off I get. Mr. I shoulda walked into that dressing room after the game and said “Listen you fecks! It was Mr. Hockey’s feckin birthday fer pete’s sake and you assholes didn’t even have the decency to show up. Ken Holland, you circus midget, you are fired! Uncle mike, you’re on a short leash! Feck!”

One problem: They had talent and desire. Detroit? Not so much

I’m a bit worried about the following:  The wings started playing better (beating Anaheim twice) following Holland commenting that they’d not be buyers unless they were looking like a playoff team.  They rallied and started winning.

When they don’t trade for anyone and realize no reinforcements are coming… will the wheels come off?  It happened to a couple teams last year and Dallas like two years in a row.  Hovering around 8th until the deadline then dropping out.

To be fair, San Jose properly steamrolled Anaheim shortly after so it’s possible that most of the credit for Detroit’s win could go to Anaheim just being dorks that week.  If San Jose hadn’t done the same thing that Detroit did to Anaheim, I would be more inclined to believe that was a Wings team playing at it’s best.  I guess that Abby got a hat trick should be the most telling fact.

No way the Yotes do that trade.  They’d be exchanging one big contract for another in Franzen, Mursak is useless, And while Paterson looks good, they’ll want someone more NHL ready.  Also, I’m not convinced Yandle is going anywhere until the ownership situation is finally resolved.

Glencross is probably gettable, but why would the rebuilding Flames want Cola?  And while Glencross is a decent player, he doesn’t address any real need.

Same with Weiss (Who can’t play till next year anyways).
