Red Wings evening news: Zetterberg, Ericsson unlikely to return for 1st round; multimedia galore

Updated 3x at 12:24 AM: Well if there's one thing I do well, it's being sick, so I'd like to thank Paul for keeping TMR running while I had a delightful little three-day break (that last part's a lie, but you get my drift).

Anyway, quite a bit of Red Wings news came down while I was absent, so while I'm not going to be able to catch up with all the oodles of Wings-Bruins set-up stuff, I can try and get you caught up with the Zetterberg news (and a short prospect catch-up post is in the pipeline).

As Paul noted, Henrik Zetterberg did skate with the Red Wings at today's practice, but Zetterberg was quite insistent that his chances of returning for the first round of the playoffs are slim to nil.

Fox 2 posited a video report of Zetterberg taking to the ice...

As did WXYZ (their new embed code is funky so if the video doesn't work click here for their story):

Zetterberg told DetroitRedWings.com's Bill Roose that he's not exactly going to jump back into the lineup...

"I think today is just one of the steps that I have to take,” said Zetterberg, who underwent back surgery on Feb. 21 to remove some of the herniated disk . “I have to start skating with the team a little bit and it was fun to be out there today and didn’t do that much but hopefully I can do more tomorrow.”

Zetterberg skated for approximately 30 minutes and participated in most of the team’s line drills but avoid those that involved physical contact.

“You just have to take it step by step,” he said. “I got the medical team looking after me too and they will pull me out when they think it’s time but I think today I was probably out there for 30 minutes and tomorrow I have morning skate and hopefully I can get out there a little bit more and still feel good.”

Zetterberg hasn’t ruled out the possibility of returning for the upcoming series with the Bruins, though he reiterated Thursday that a return to the lineup is more likely for a Round 2 series.

“Time-wise we were shooting for Round 2 if everything goes well,” he said. “Increase intensity every day and hopefully in a couple days maybe I can do some more battling drills.”

And he continued while speaking with MLive's Brendan Savage...

He said his conditioning level feels good so far.

“But I also haven’t done that much out there,” Zetterberg said. “I’ve been doing more stuff in the gym and on the bike but it’s different to go out and skate. It’s basically training camp all over again. I’ve been out for two months and that’s basically what a summer is for us normally, so it’s just getting used to everything as far as skating. Only difference is your first game is the playoffs, not Game 1 of the regular season.”

Who noted the following:

Meanwhile, defenseman Jonathan Ericsson skated for about 25 minutes before practice. It was his first time on the ice since having surgery March 19 to repair broken fingers and a partially torn tendon in his left hand.

He is not likely  to return in the first round.

The coach was blunt when speaking with the Free Press's George Sipple:

“Good for him,” coach Mike Babcock said when asked about Zetterberg skating. “I saw him at Nick Lidstrom’s retirement March 6, and he couldn’t walk. He hobbled his way out onto the ice. Now he’s out there skating. That’s a long way in a short period of time.

“Anyone that’s been injured and off a good chunk of time, when they arrive back, they see how fast everything is. It’s hard. That’s the tough thing about injuries — even when you get the guys back, they’re not themselves. They wear the same number, but they don’t do what they did because it’s just too hard.”

Babcock also addressed the Wings' first-round match-up with Boston, Pavel Datsyuk's health, Zetterberg's status (declaring Kronwall to basically be the acting captain and Zetterberg to be someone he's "not worried about" because Zetterberg isn't available) and the Winter Classic experience:

Mickey Redmond spoke with Detroit Sports 105.1's Drew Lane on Wednesday (and the Redmond interview is 37 minutes long)...

And WDFN's Matt Sheppard spoke with the AHL's coach of the year, Jeff Blashill, today...

Sheppard spoke with Mike Babcock on Wednesday...

And Sheppard also spoke with Bruins defenseman Torey Krug:

Krug's from Livonia, but for the next two weeks, he's been disowned...By me, anyway.

Quickie update: Here's Zetterberg speaking with the media on Tuesday, per WXYZ...

nd Fox 2's Woody Woodriffe filed a practice report from Wednesday...

And Jennifer Hammond reported on Tuesday...

(I didn't find any video from the Wings' website so I figured you might want to see what else was out there)

Update #2: Darren McCarty spoke with Detroit Sports 105.1 FM's Matt Dery in a 2-part interview. Here's part 1...

And here's part 2:

Update #3: Here's the NHL Network's Game 1 preview...

And from Fox Sports Detroit, comments from Gustav Nyquist...

Brendan Smith...

Tomas Jurco...

And Johan Franzen...

It is absolutely maddening to know the Wings could have had Krug for free when he was in their own backyard playing in East Lansing, and they passed.

Wouldn’t be the playoffs if George didn’t get “sick.” Every single season the most entertaining Red Wings sport writer disappears at the most crucial time. LGRW.

Here is the honest-to-God-in-heaven-and-yes-I-do-believe-in-a-higher-power truth as to why I was absent:

It was going to happen sooner or later. My aunt has had an incredibly bad flare-up of lupus and fibromyalgia and she’s ill. My mother got some sort of uber-bug at the dentist *and* I had to take her to the doctor’s office last Wednesday. I was feeling terrible for the last three or four games and I just tried to grind through it, I took Monday “off”...

And all of that shit combined with my awful immune system yielded three days of being whalloped with the virus the mom was battling, in no small part due to having to haul her to multiple appointments and getting super tired last week.

Do you think I like missing time? Or that I like it when I get sick? Or that I’ve spent the past two first rounds battling through boogers?

*#$%@& no. It sucks, it’s embarrassing and it’s just plain old painful. I don’t want to wreck anybody’s day, make covering the playoffs hard for Paul or you or anybody else.

I have worked my ass off over the past three years with KK and the rest of my tenure with MLive to battle both physical and mental illnesses sans insurance, and I’ve done the best that I can.

I am *hoping* that the medicaid expansion will be a game-changer in terms of my mental health, but I’ve got some physical issues that I are chronic, including degrading sinuses that were surgically repaired fifteen years ago and need a tune-up after living with smokers for the past eight years, and quite frankly, my immune system has always sucked.

I’ve always had some sort of auto-immune “something,” like every other person in my family, and when the aunt gets particularly ill (she has it the worst of all of us), it is almost inevitable that the mom and I will get nailed with something.

I got tired, I got driving to doctor bugs and I’ve been around people whose immune systems were flaring up as the seasons changed. I got sick.. I didn’t MEAN to get sick. I tell Paul that if I can sit up, I will work, and I couldn’t sit up on Tuesday, Wednesday or most of Thursday. That’s just the truth.

Yzerman lifted the cup on one leg George, just sayin….

Purely joking, quit being so hard on yourself, from a content standpoint, your blog has more info on the subject (the wings) than most blogs I’ve come across, you ever look around for a good blog on other teams in other sports, or other subjects, I have, not easy to find one stop content shopping.

Wow.. Babcock seems confident in this post… “We’ll be a hard out. I think we’re a lot better than teams think we are”... Nice.
