Red Wings-Ducks pre-game update: Brunner out, more on Murph’s firing

Via RedWingsFeed, here's a big surprise ahead of tonight's game between the Red Wings and Ducks--and perhaps a necessary move given Damien Brunner's struggles of late...

The Free Press's Helene St. James confirms...

Brunner needs a game off to calm down and re-set himself.

And regarding the "Bring Back Murph movement," The Production Line offered some inside info related to Fox Sports Detroit's firing of Larry Murphy:

Update: The Free Press's St. James is confirming that Brunner's scratch is a one-time thing:

Damien Brunner will spend a game on the sidelines hopes a little breather will help him regain his footing.

Brunner was scratched from the Detroit Red Wings' lineup Sunday against the Ducks, the first time this season he's been taken out. Brunner has 10 goals, but hasn't scored in 12 games.

This is Brunner's first season in the NHL after spending his career in his native Switzerland, and the pace - 48 games in 99 days - is far harder than anything he's experienced. Giving him a day off was as much about giving him a mental and physical break as sending a message.

General manager Ken Holland said Brunner will be back in the lineup Monday, when the Wings play at Phoenix.

Depends on who was, and wasn’t, asked.  Knowing how Detroit’s inestimable beat-writers roll she just took the Holland quote and regurgitated it like a good little monkey while a writer with a little bit of drive or ambition might have taken the quote to Babcock and seen what fell out.  Maybe nothing, maybe just a look, maybe a quote.

Of course, we’ll never know.  It probably wouldn’t have amounted to anything anyway.  Still, it’d be nice if journalism wasn’t completely dead everywhere in the universe.

Well, if the above is correct, the Wings themselves are out of the conspiracy theory for Larry Murphy’s firing. He’s done occasional work for the NHL, including I believe the Stanley Cup on radio. Mike Goldberg landed on his feet after his dismissal, I hope Murphy does, too.
