Red Wings-Blackhawks quick take: yet another humiliating matinee game loss to Chicago

Update: UGH:

FYI:

The Detroit Red Wings began their 7-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks finding out that Henrik Zetterberg had taken himself out of the game due to a groin injury, and by the time the game ended, the Mikael Samuelsson had succumbed to an "upper-body" injury (may be his last game for the Wings given how badly he's played in limited action--he's a cap-compliance buy-out lock).

With Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay, Alex Delvecchio, Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom in the house, the Red Wings played like they'd forgotten that those #9 jerseys they wore in warm-ups did not in fact give them super powers against a Blackhawks team that's owned them at the Joe...

So the Blackhawks came out and owned the Wings at the Joe, forcing the Wings' defense into making the same kind of own-goal-scoring defensive mistakes (hi, Jakub Kindl) that the Wings committed during their 2-0 loss to the Sharks on Thursday, and while Mike Babcock called himself out on the bench, and his players will call themselves out after the game, there's simply no excuse for playing this poorly this regularly against Chicago at the Joe.

I'm not going to do much other than update Zetterberg and Samuelsson's statuses. I'm turning this quick take over to you. Vent away, because tomorrow's NBCSN game against the Avs has just become a must-must-win if the Wings don't want the playoff pack to catch up to them--and it's worth noting that the Wings are now 0-and-3 with Lidstrom and Holmstrom watching them.

And no, we can't blame the players' wives...You can't blame Jonas Gustavsson (who may have lost his job to Petr Mrazek today) or Jimmy Howard per se, but the Wings' skaters...Were awful, and hearing Hawks fans chant "Let's Go Hawks" during the last minutes of the 3rd" was just disgusting. Good on the Joe's fans for drowning 'em out...

But this pattern has to end if the Wings are to indeed make good on their playoff push during what is very clearly a rebuilding and/or transitional year, and the effort has to come from the players the Wings have, not the players we hope will magically appear on Detroit's roster before Wednesday.

Update: The Windsor Star's Bob Duff posted a video of Niklas Kronwall calling himself and his teammates out:

Update #2: Via RedWingsFeed, the Wings' YouTube channel posted clips of Kronwall...

“I’m OK where we’re at,” Holland said.

I’m OK too.

seriously, wow. was fun fast forwarding through 55 mins of this one.

nobody had a good game. when it went 6-0 i thought, “the detroit blue jackets showed up today,” then decided that wasn’t fair to the players in columbus.

seriously. when was the last time the Wings had a pre-game ceremony and didn’t lay an egg?

to those clamoring for a big trade, think:

- the cap is going way down and we have guys to resign
- days like this show me that one or two guys might not make a difference vs elite teams anyway
- the return for our crappy veterans won’t be very high anyway
- there’s no prospect or pick i’d move for a rental player this season

if i’m holland i try to get what i can for white and sammuelsson, resign fil NOW or move him this week (keep him if affordable, move him for a great offer), and start thinking about how to get some size at forward.

btw still watching the 3rd on delay. gustavsson was indeed horrid.

I’m sure the mindset of Detroit’s upper brass right now is “We were only six shots away from tying this thing, and then it’s anyone’s game”

last, what i don’t like about holland’s management of late isn’t his lack of a big trade or signing, it’s the moves he’s already made. i never really understood extending bert, signing tootoo, or bringing sammy back, and the experiment with gustavsson has been a disaster. time to fire some of these “pro scouts.”

Make Babcock called 7-1 #RedWings loss “57 minutes of awful”

When were the 3 good minutes?

Big, big changes needed. Mostly subtractions. Literally 1/2 of this team could disappear tomorrow and I would have no problem with it. Tons of dead weight.

And again, anyone who thinks the Wings need to be trade deadline buyers, after this abortion of a performance, needs to have their heads examined.

Just too many average or below average players this year…management has to do something. I don’t think they can win the Cup, but they can make the playoffs, and keep the legacy alive.

We need Z back, but he needs to be able to play well. Trim the fat…Cleary, Samuelsson, Bertuzzi…no more spending money on guys like this. We need Helm back. We need another scorer. We need the kids to be playing and getting used to the NHL.

The defense could be good. The players are fine, but there isn’t a bona fide 1-2 pairing. Split up the ice time more evenly.

Teach the team how to handle a forecheck. Cut down on the turnovers. Drive the net more, shoot from the middle of the ice. Do SOMETHING.

Hey guys, all it takes for us to win the cup is for the good teams to start sucking!  Let’s keep our fingers crossed.  I like our team!

Can’t argue with a whole lot here.  This was a chance for some of our younger guys to put their foot in the leadership door.  We have some guys who are “gamers” who didn’t show that tonight.  Losing while busting your ass I’m OK with. But I’d have been pissed to have spent money on a ticket to today’s game.

Bad enough the team had a hard time getting up for a game without Helm in the lineup.  With Z out, it was like watching auto-pilot out there.

I RARELY saw legs churning when the play was coming back on them.  Everyone doing big hoops to turn around today instead of start-stopping, not finishing checks, not supporting teammates in puck-battles.  They just didn’t come to compete.

That said, you can’t win every game, but we’be been bemoaning all our floaters in the top 6, well this is a byproduct of that.  If your guys getting good minutes don’t give a shit enough to play, why is a bottom 6 guy going to?  Especially when they’re only supposed to contribute, not carry the team.

Everyone was bad tonight.  Some more than others, but really disappointed in the people who DIDNT show up, the ones I thought would.

Now that they can extend their roster they’ll prolly bring up all the good Griffins to don the black sweaters and feck up their chance at the Calder Cup. Feck this team is annoying me!

Could have given the Blackhawks more of a challenge then the Wings that skated today.

Listening to Babs post-game, makes me REALLY wish he’d have kept them there to bag skate them Herb Brooks style.  If they didn’t want to play during the game, we’d get our sweat out of’em one way or another.  They get paid a lot of money, not to show up like that, pisses me off.

Can’t believe this team is this mentally weak.

An abortion of a game, and on a day when they are honoring the Godfather of Hockey no less.  Samuelsson a buy out candidate?  Hahahahahaa, not with Ken Holland, he’s a Red Wing for life, just watch.  And the Wings should look to move guys like White in a sellers market for a draft pick or something.  Time to cut bait with deadweight that won’t be here next season anyways.  I am beyond frustrated by their lack of fight, fieratively and literally, bad losses happen but the Wings just didn’t even play, no emotion that is in-excusable.

That is why I really respect Mike Babcock.
No excuses… No B.S… No “party line”, no spin, no politically correctness.

“57 minutes of pain” ... We were unprepared and did not compete, and it is on the coaches as well as the players.

Where else in the modern world do you get such candor?

I like people who are straight forward and (sometimes brutally) honest.

This has been said quite a few times the last 2-3 years. There’s an issue somewhere in the organ-I-zation if this level of suckitude becomes any more common place.
