Red Wings’ beat writers nominate Daniel Alfredsson for Masterton Trophy

The Macomb Daily's Chuck Pleiness reports that the Red Wings' beat writers have given Daniel Alfredsson the nod as their pick for the Masterton Trophy:

Daniel Alfredsson has been named the Detroit chapter of Professional Hockey Writers’ Association candidate for this season’s Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.

The annual award is given to the player that best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.

Alfredsson, who is a leading advocate for mental health causes, was a finalist for the award in 2012, but lost out to Montreal’s Max Pacioretty.

Two Red Wings – defenseman Brad Park (1983-84) and center Steve Yzerman (2002-03) – are past recipients of the award.
Alfredsson has 17 goals and 28 assists in 63 games this season with the Wings.

Detroit landed the long-time Ottawa Senator on the first day of free agency, inking him for one year at $3.5 million plus $2 million in bonuses that would bring the deal up to $5.5 million.

Should be Nyquist, who persevered through the Dan Cleary signing by playing 2 months in Grand Rapids and then told Mike Babcock and Ken Holland to go f themselves by going on a Stamkos/Ovechkin-esque scoring binge and carrying the team into and out of the Olympic break.

Perseverance: stayed in Grand Rapids for two months while Cleary played game after game. Played well when he finally got to Detroit.

Sportsmanship: if he was ever upset, the dude never let it on. I haven’t ever heard a peep other than Nyquist “was disappointed but understood the circumstances.” Team player.

Dedication: Despite being sent down, he didn’t sulk. He led GR out of the gate as the team’s clear leader and put up the points to back it up. I have to imagine some of the guys now carrying weight down there learned some things from Gus because look at how smoothly they’ve continued to play despite several of the team’s best players getting called up to Detroit.

Perseverance and dedication?

Nyquist should get the award based solely on his goal yesterday…

I think Helm should be in consideration for making himself a punching bag for our entertainment.  If he plays a full 82 game season any time in his career it will be because he drastically changed his playing style.  Every time he’s flying 25 mph at the net with players hauling him down from behind then flying into the 1. Goal, 2. End Boards, or 3. Another player I’m holding my breath.

No offense to Alfie, but I think both Pavel and Hank deserve that nomination ahead of him. They’re the very definition of “perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.”
