Red Wings announce week-long program and partnership with DTE to help people in home heating trouble

The Red Wings didn't issue a press release regarding a charitable drive to be held during Saturday's game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, but this issue is just as important as the cancer initiatives, veterans' intiatives, smoke detector drives and childhood illness initiatives that the Wings engage in on a daily basis.

The State of Michigan's made significant cuts to aid for low-income Michiganders who can't afford to pay their heat or electric bills, eliminating aid before November and after March (if you've lived in this state or its northern regions, you know that it gets cold before November) the State's made massive cuts to the programs in general, and it's chosen to celebrate the end of stimulus funding by passing on their "savings" to those in need...

There are very literally many people all over the State of Michigan, Southeastern Michigan and the City of Detroit whose homes aren't heated, and that's not right.

DTE Energy, The Heat and Warmth Fund (THAW) and the Detroit Red Wings are joining forces to help Michigan families stay warm this winter. As part of a week long series of events, DTE Energy, THAW and the Wings are hosting Warmth With Wings at the Red Wings’ Saturday, November 9 face-off against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

You can show your support in several ways:

• Visit the DTE Energy and THAW tables in the Joe Louis arena concourse. Get energy saving info that will help you save energy and save money in your home. Let your warm heart warm a home of someone in need by making a donation to THAW. Sign up to win a Red Wings jersey, too!

• You can make a donation online at THAW.org

Warmth With Wings is one of a series of Week of Warmth events. Our goal is to fill the gap left by significant cuts to state and federal energy assistance budgets, by raising money and distributing more than a million dollars in emergency assistance to Michigan residents in need.

• DTE Energy, THAW, NEXTera Energy and more than 70 area businesses and hundreds of individuals like you throughout the Detroit metro area are coming together to support this effort.

• THAW is an independent, non-profit agency that assists low-income seniors and families, the disabled and the working poor with emergency energy assistance

We are neighbors helping neighbors. Together we can make a difference.

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
