The centerpiece of the Red Wings' training camp activities is usually their Red vs. White game, which will take place on Sunday the 15th at 11 AM, but the alumni and celebrity game on Saturday the 14th at 7:30 may take the cake instead. Ken Holland, Mike Babcock, Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Chris Chelios, Chris Osgood, Mark Howe, Ken Daniels and Mickey Redmond, Ken Kal and Jiri Fischer are all going to play, and Traverse City's resident Red Wings alumnus, Dallas Drake, will be taking part as well.
Drake spoke with the Grand Traverse Insider's Greg Gielczyk about his status as a playing alum....
"It's always good for me, personally, to see some of my old teammates," Drake said. "I'll probably see a lot of guys from the NHL that I played against. That's always fun for guys like myself, and I think it'll be a lot of fun for the public as well. To be honest with you, I haven't seen the complete list. It's fun playing with guys who were there before you, and those who came after you,” he added.
Drake skates as often as he can, probably not as much as he'd like to, and got out on the ice during the Development Camp.
Then again, he doesn't anticipate the speed of the alumni game to be the same as in his playing days. This is about having fun, after all.
"Nobody is going to go 100 miles an hour," he joked. "Nobody wants to get hurt. It'll be enjoyable that way. Guys are just going to be out there to have a really good time, and put on a good show for the fans who come out, and get some laughs more than anything else."
As well as Jimmy Howard's U.S. Olympic candidacy, which Gielczyk believes is the biggest local angle coming into camp:
"In my opinion, he'll have a really good chance," Drake remarked. "He'll be one of the top three, anyways, in the net. He's put a couple of really good years together, so I think he'll be a really strong candidate for the USA Hockey Team, that's for sure."
The 29-year old Howard was one of six goalies invited to try out for the Olympic team, along with the Los Angeles Kings Jonathan Quick, Buffalo's Ryan Miller, Ottawa Senators Craig Anderson, Cory Schneider of the New Jersey Devils' and Anaheim Ducks prospect John Gibson. But don't put too much stock in what happens during camp, Drake cautions.
It's what Howard does during the regular season that will count the most, and a decision will probably be reached around Christmas.
"Just because you have a good or bad camp doesn't necessarily mean that's going to happen when the regular season starts," Drake said. "Training camp is basically for players to get in shape, to prepare and get their bodies ready for a long season. Nobody wants to go out there and hurt themselves, especially those players who have established themselves in the league for a long time now."

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
