Questions Unanswered

from Bill Roose at the Wings' site,

“Do we have Dan Cleary signed, or not signed? Do we have Brunner signed or not signed? Do we have Stephen Weiss signed or not signed? I don’t know,” Holland said. “Are we going to sign someone in the open market or not sign anyone in the open market? We just know that we have to be at 50 contracts or less.”

much more...

Is it wrong that I’m holding out hope the real reason Vinny went elsewhere was because Yzerman will be taking over as GM in Detroit sometime soon.

From the article:

...the team has extended an invitation to Kurt Etchegary, an undrafted center who played the past two seasons with the Quebec Remparts of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Etchegary was expected to be selected in last Sunday’s NHL draft in New Jersey. However, the 18-year-old native of St. John’s, Newfoundland, missed three months of the season following arthroscopic hip surgery last fall.

“He will be at the camp, and should be coming into the fall camp also,” said Jiri Fischer, the Red Wings director of player development. “Right now he’s training in Montreal and really wants to prove everybody wrong that he should have been drafted.”

“He’s an in-your-face competitor, chases people down and really battles,” Fischer said. “He goes in the areas of pain and doesn’t mind going into the corners, doesn’t mind crashing the net. At the same time, he has decent skill and is a smart hockey player.”

According to some scouting reports, Etchegary is strong on faceoffs guy and his game is comparable to Los Angeles center Mike Richards.

One of those “undrafted free agents” Holland likes to bring around.

What? Did NHL GM of the Detroit Redwings just say that? The only person that should worry about that is the intern you hired for the summer Ken, you’re the friggin GM! you’re supposed to be dishing and dealing to put together a formidable lineup for the Eastern conference, if you just had to be at 50 contracts or less every person who has ever played NHL 13 could take over your job… did he really just say that?

I hope he gets it, because if he gets that and Flip gets 5 somewhere else then that means maybe Kenny can concentrate on a scoring winger instead of the obsessive need to replace a non-#2 centre.

Yep.

Right after he said he didn’t know if they’ve signed/re-signed Cleary, Flip or Weiss.

How many retard sandwiches did he eat just before this interview?

A)  “I don’t know.”  Never a good thing to say out-loud to an edgy fan-base.  Also, I think Kenny sounded a little snippy in that paragraph.

B) I might be the only one that thinks Cullen is a real option for us. He battles on the boards, he goes to the net, he’s a good locker-room presence, he probably isn’t asking for $5mil a year…

C) There has been some discussion of Grabovski on the last board.  I wouldn’t be too upset if we signed him.  He’s…an intriguing option.

Its kinda obvious that he doesn’t know ... he made an offer to their agents and now the players have to decide where they want to play and for how much.

Answers will come on or before Friday at noon.

Why players are asking for high salaries and long terms now is beyond me.  Salary cap is down and most teams don’t have room.

Sign a 2 year for $3.5mil. ea.  and when the cap goes to $80mil. you go for your big bucks cuz more teams will have more cap space.

Greed ... stupidity ... I thought these guys were supposed to have agents to help them.

In Fil’s case yeah ... I think its his wacko agent fuching up his head with all of these huge numbers.

If I were Fil I’d take a 2 year at $ $3.5 mil. each and work out all summer with Gary Roberts ... come to camp in the best shape ever and play like an animal for that big contract when the cap goes up.

Clarkson plays great for half a season and thinks someone is going to barf up a long term $6 mil. per contract ??  And they say hockey players don’t do drugs ... bwaaaahahaha ... it must be the beer talkin’

Weiss can dream if he thinks he’s gunna get more than $5 mil. per ... buried in Florida where no one sees you play ... fat chance pal.

Even in his prime Ribiero wasn’t worth much more than 4 or 5 mil. a year.  If he gets much more than that on a 3 year i’d be surprised ... unless he wants to play for the Islanders or Winnipeg ... some city where he ain’t gunna win jack.

At the end of the day, if the only 2 players we get signed are Brunner and Iggy I’d be happy.

Bringing that Etchegary kid to camp is a good move too.  Put him on a line with Callahan and let them grind away.

Bidding for Bozak

LeBrun also reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the mix to re-signing Tyler Bozak, but the Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings are among the other teams that have kicked the tires on the free agent centre. LeBrun suspects that Bozak is seeking a deal of five years or more. Dreger adds that Bozak’s negotiation with the Maple Leafs could impact Phil Kessel’s future with the club as well. Dreger asked aloud on Twitter that if Bozak goes, is Kessel as eager to re-sign in Toronto? Also, look for the Dallas Stars to be a contender for his services.

Motor City Market

LeBrun thinks that free agent centre Stephen Weiss would be the No. 1 option for Detroit going into Friday, but Bozak is in there as well. Meanwhile, the Red Wings still talking to free agent forward Valtteri Filppula.

Angling For Alfie

Lots of teams have reached out to long-time Ottawa Senator captain Daniel Alfredsson and while Boston has been the most aggressive of the new suitors, LeBrun reports that with so many Swedish connection, Detroit was among teams that also called.

hmmmmm ... if there’s anyone that would motivate Franzen to play his best every shift it just may be Alfredsson.

I know he’s 40 but he still plays hard every shift like he’s 30.

I’m in .. sign him ... offer a 1 year with a 2nd year option ... see what happens.

its funny how some of you just write ONLY negative bitchy shit ALL offseason, every offseason, and then write negative bitchy shit ALL season - and oh, and the trade deadline almost makes you explode and then the Wings go farther than everyone expected in the playoffs and you all finally shutup because after year of being wrong, you don’t want to draw attention to yourselves. Suddenly, there’s not a peep about Abdelkader. Nothing about Cleary or Quincey or Babs or Kenny. Nothing. You just let them quietly succeed like you saw it coming the whole time. And then a month after the season ends, you are back on your high horse calling Ken Holland retarded and endlessly bitching because he won’t make random blockbuster trades or overpay every (bought out) “star” so you aren’t bored because “liking our team” (you know the one that almost made conference finals IN A REBUILDING YEAR) is just sooooo boring and you just can’t handle it. And so you will bombard us all with unceasing cynicism and complaints until next playoffs when the boys shut you up yet again.

I for one, DO like our team. You should try it, it actually makes this whole thing a lot more fun.

Det News: http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130704/SPORTS0103/307040036/1128/

Holland, who said he will not use the other compliance buyout, spent the majority of Wednesday contacting agents for approximately six players the team is interested in signing, as well as his own free agents. Players can sign Friday.

One target is Panthers center Stephen Weiss, who played in 17 games last season (four points, one goal) before season-ending wrist surgery.

“There’s going to be a lot of competition for centers, teams are looking for centers,” said Holland, who’ll need someone to replace Valtteri Filppula, who likely is leaving.

As for his own players, Holland said he offered contracts to to Daniel Cleary and Damien Brunner, both of whom can be unrestricted free agents Friday.

“They know we’d like them back,” Holland said.

Brunner scored 10 goals in the first 19 games last season, but had two the final 25 before rebounding in the playoffs (fiv e goals in 14 games).

“Yes, teams have called about Damien Brunner and important decisions will have to be made between now and Friday,” Brunner’s agent, Neil Sheehy, wrote in an e-mail.

Cleary told Holland he wants to see what the level of interest is around the league before committing.

Why would anyone bitch about Abby ??
He had a breakout season once Datsyuk opened his mouth and asked Babs to put him on his line.
We all knew Abby had an offencive up-side ... we were just waiting for him to get that chance.

As for over-paying other teams “throw-aways” ... oh hell no ... there’s no reason to do it and, above all, there’s no cap space to do it.

For the most part, I too “like” the kids we have.  Not looking for Holland to do a major overhaul but it would be nice if he showed some effort in trying to make the team just a weeee bit better.

1 or 2 impact free agents at a reasonable price should do.
Every team needs a bit of experience to go along with a boat load of kids.
For the most part, we’re just looking for that one player to “put us over the edge” into greatness.

I never said anything about being a “true fans” or “wanting the team to get better”. If you’re writing on hockey blogs in the summer, you’re likely a “true fan” and the fact is we ALL want the team to get better. I hope Kenny signs someone tomorrow as much as anyone… but if he doesn’t, I sure won’t be calling for his job or pretending like I can do it better. My issue is about the UNCEASING negativity with relatively little cause. We are over achieving. What exactly is the problem? If we sign Lecavlier, there would be endless bitching about how we “overripe” kids while slow vets get all the ice time and if we pass on the slow vet to give a kid a chance, all of a sudden Kenny’s not “proactive” enough, etc. There’s no pleasing. We could win the cup and on July 6th you’d be screaming about how terrible Holland is once again.

You’re kidding, right?  How many people post here?  Do you really think that everyone should agree with everything (or anything)that the team does?  Of course here are going to be people on both sides of every situation.  That’s how shit works.

If you can’t handle the fact that there will never be anything that everyone agrees about, then I just don’t know what to say, except tha maybe you should lock yourself in a room by yourself any never interact with anyone again…

Garth,

Please, please, PLEASE heed your own advice and take your condescending, self-important-but-thoroughly-mentally-impotent, corner-painting negativity somewhere else and start your own blog.  You can even call it TheFuckWhinesHere and that will give me two blogs to ignore.  Just once, I’d love to check the comments for some well-reasoned discourse and not see a third of them that deserve “You have chosen to ignore comments from this member”.  If you’re what’s considered a “true fan” of the Detroit Red Wings, then I don’t want to be associated with this team.  Unfortunately for your tremendously convoluted and overwrought ego, I don’t think - nay, I know - that you yourself can’t be called a “true fan”, despite whatever bona fides you choose to cite, because that would entail an appreciation for at least ONE aspect of this team.  Without further ado, it brings me great satisfaction to add you to the ever-growing list of ignored buffoons that circle the drain of my time.

Much better.
