Questions For Khan

Ansar Khan answered questions from the fans today...

Q: I think it is safe to say the Red Wings have a salary problem. A lot of long deals with players that are hurting us. How are the Wings going to be able to sign guys like Dylan Larkin and Anthony Mantha next summer? The (Tomas) Tatar deal really seems like it is hurting us now, especially, with Athanasiou not signed yet. The only two salaries I see that expire at the end of this coming season are (Mike) Green and Mrazek. I can’t imagine this team is going to make the playoffs, but is that the only way for the Wings to re-sign those two guys is by trading the aforementioned?

A: You can argue Tatar is making slightly more than he should at $5.3 million per season, but not it’s not outrageous, based on Gustav Nyquist’s salary ($4.75 million). And Tatar’s deal has absolutely nothing to do with Athanasiou being unsigned. Even if Tatar had signed for $4.5 million, giving the Red Wings an additional $800,000 to play with, they’d still be in the same predicament with Athanasiou because, like I stated earlier, the club doesn’t believe a player with 27 goals and 43 points in 101 games is worth more than $1.9 million per season, regardless of his huge potential.

They’ll be able to offer Larkin and Mantha fair-market value. No concern there. They obviously are building blocks for the future and priorities to keep in the fold. They’ll have ample cap space for those signings and other moves (signing Frk and Tyler Bertuzzi) if Green and Mrazek are off the books ($10 million combined).

“Q: Why would we expect to be better than last year, if the coach returns to giving the worst players much more time than the best? Is any of that to help Holland justify their inflated salaries? Cannot be, for instance that (Riley) Sheahan and (Justin) Abdelkader are better defensively than (Martin) Frk, (Anthony) Mantha or (Dylan) Larkin. Check last year’s plus-minus. AA is worth more than $1.2 million. Certainly, if you are paying (Luke) Glendening twice that to not score and be below average on the PK. – Bill

A: There is no correlation between ice time and salaries. Blashill determines ice time, lineups, lines, etc., with no interference from Holland. Sheahan and Abdelkader are better defensively than Frk, Mantha and Larkin. Plus-minus isn’t the sole indicator of who’s better defensively. But, I agree that Sheahan should have been scratched more often, his ice time reduced and not used on the power play during last season’s struggles. Blashill thought otherwise. Athanasiou was offered $1.25 million on a one-year deal, lower annual salary than the two-year offer because the one season doesn’t “buy” an arbitration-eligible season. Comparables suggest he is worth in the $2 million range.”

This Madness must end.

So for comparison, in the previous 100GP before their extensions were signed:

Abdelkader: 29G 56P ==> All that extra salary and term for only 13 more points?

Helm:        17G 35P ==> Can we get our money back?

Oh wait, but muh experience and muh 200ft game!!!

Q. Who were the comparables were used by KH in reference to AA. Numbers being equal, have these comparables been able to pull off an end to end scoring rush against a comparable line of players that AA.did and did those players also skate down a player in full stride on a breakaway and take the puck off his stick. If not what plus factor does KH allow for these abilities or are they disregarded altogether. Since this is a team sport and empirical formulas such as Corsi, etc. are directly affected by your linemates, was AA given a plus/minus for being on a better or worse line and not a set line. When talk of trade, KH speaks of AA’s huge potential, why does he not allow for that, or should we dismiss it as a sales pitch. Is there any point KH would reevaluate his comparables decision?

Colin, everyone uses games, when in fact playing time is the issue. AA is 27 goals in 1191 minutes, Tatar last year had 25 goals in 1417 minutes. AA gets virtually no PP time and had 1 PPG, Tatar plays on most PPs and had 5 PPG. Tatar doesn’t spend any time on the third and fourth lines.

KH just has a system that he pretty much follows for many years. Entry level contract, then one or two small RFA contracts and then a big UFA contract. Abby, Helm and Glen examples show that your contributions on the ice do not matter that much. If you were drafted by KH and you are a “good soldier”, you will get paid, just need to be patient. But things change, the league gets younger and a lot of young players, especially talented ones, do not want to be patient, they want to be paid now.

That’s normal KH , now he’s in deep with the salary cap, last year of his contract, I believe Ilitch has hired someone to head his sports operations and by the initial looks, Tigers-JD Martinez, Upton, Verlander all gone Red Wings- nothing but future is uncertain but that stadium wasn’t built to be left empty - concession loses must be staggering. That’s one reason I think AA is trying to get more money, and again he’s stuck here, but if the salary is large enough he’ll put up with most of his dislikes just like most people.

I have real concerns when it comes to negotiating new deals with Larkin & Mantha.  The days of the bridge deals seem to be gone, especially of higher tend talent the likes of these two.  I think both of these guys are going to command something the $5mil/yr plus range.  So there goes that $10mil cleared by Green and Mrazek.

I love how Khan just glosses over the fact that our best d-man just magically disappears. So Green either gets traded (hopefully) or walks away for nothing as a UFA (possibly). And his $6M helps sign Larkin, Mantha, etc…Awesome. And then we replace Green with who? Hicketts? Russo? Another 34-year old UFA like Daley. Yeah that won’t be a problem Khan. None at all. Did you get Kenny to proofread your answers again Khan?

LOL, And have started the season with ZERO points, 10M down the toilet.  I will give Tats a chance but Nyquist can’t leave fast enough IMO

Green has 8 Assists so far, without him the Wings are probably near ZERO points.

Howard is playing lights out until he gets injured or starts to slide with age.

Who replaces Howard and Mrazek.  I know the jury is out on Mrazek with 1/2 a season that fell apart, how many crappy seasons does Howard have. 1 maybe goalie prospect about 3/4 yrs at best.

This is really a tanking by KH.

Khan really sounds like he was ordered to right this by KH, no way can Khan be as lost as KH.

Go Nosek and Vegas, a real possibility

Too bad none of these kids down in GR won’t ever be good enough to break into the NHL. Holland’s with his far reaching acumen has exquisitely created his defense of the now and future.
