On Friedman’s Dougie Hamilton talk

I stuffed this into the "morning news" post, but this probably requires its own post. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman brought this up in his, "30 Thoughts" column:
13. That brings us to Dougie Hamilton. Nick Kypreos mentioned the rumours last weekend. Hamilton’s name has been in and out of NHL whispering circles since the draft, but Calgary GM Brad Treliving has always denied them. What no one can dispute is Hamilton’s minutes per game: 17:07 as a rookie, then 19:06, a career-high 21:20 in his third year, 19:46 and 18:26 so far in season five — fifth among Flames blueliners. He’s been above 20 minutes once since Oct. 20. His last three games saw him play 16:24, 14:39 and 15:56. If you trade him now, you might be selling low, but I think there are teams who believe they can make a better player out of him yet. He’s 23. Wonder if Detroit, having struck out so far on Cam Fowler and Jacob Trouba, would have interest.
Problem: The Wings have no cap space, and Hamilton has a $5.75 million cap hit (per CapFriendly). The Flames would want both a defenseman and prospects in return, but the Wings would have to move commensurate salary to acquire Hamilton, and that's a tough fit.

But a #4 on any other NHL team is a #2, at least, on ours.

Just another #4 guy, no need for a 7th one of those
That’s an “elite, elite, elite” d-corps you’re talking about like that.

He sounds a lot like Brendan Smith…..but at 2x the cost…....

Throw Nyquist at them and put Kronwall on career-ending LTIR and voila, cap space galore.

Brendan Smith ya think? Point total tell me they are very different from one another. Minus his rookie year which he was on pace for at least 40 points, he’s put up 40 per year. Smith isn’t even close in terms of potential or skill level

He’d be an upgrade and instantly one of the Wings best defense if trade
Posted by benzanato on 11/16/16 at 01:17 PM ET

He’s also younger than Ryan Sproul. No reason to think he’s maxed out.

And there’s no reason to call Hamilton a bust when he’s playing for a team like Calgary. Smith? Now that’s a bust. If Marchy and DDK keep playing the way they are this season I’d call them bust too. Hamilton has put up steady numbers, equivalent to a top 3. On a crappie team to past several years too, I don’t get the “bust” notion. He’d instantly be an upgrade and one of the Wings top 3 defensemen.

I think the Flames really overrated their goalie signings this summer. Howard and Hamilton would be close to a wash in Cap space I think. Throwing in Air Head Smith would certainly.
Would Calgary be dumb enough to take Smith and his Cap Space??

No, absolutely not. They don’t need a mediocre guy who only helps them for one year before his contract is up. If anything they’d be selling everyone and playing kids, not taking on a one year contract.

He did play his best D while working with Coach Houda…

Smith, Tatar, Oulette?
Pipe-dream? Not enough cap space cleared out?
