The Malik Report

On charitable events and a District Detroit milestone

Of Red Wings-related note this morning:

1. WDIV's Nick Monacelli reports that a 5K run will formally kick off Joe Louis Arena's final season as the Red Wings' home. The event will raise funds for the Red Wings Foundation:

The farewell season at "The Joe" will begin in September, the last season the Detroit Red Wings will play there before moving into Little Caesar’s Arena.

Jim Biewer, a Marking Director for the team, said they’ve been planning for months.

“We’re pulling out all the stops, we’re going all out,” Biewer said. “We want to make sure people remember Joe Louis Arena for what it was (and) the historic memories that they have here.”

Biewer added that almost every game and event will have something memorable for those attending.

“You’re going to see alumni, you will see giveaways and keepsakes to take home with you, so you’ll always have a piece of The Joe with you," Biewer said.

Kicking off the farewell season is the HockeyTown 5K [on September 10th]. a brand new run and walk that will begin outside the arena on the stairs of the Gordie Howe entrance.

The Wings just posted a Tweet linking to their "Hockeytown 5 K" registration page:

2. Tickets to the Joe Kocur Foundation's annual charity softball game are available now...

3. And the District Detroit website announced that Olympia Development has awarded $300 million in contracts related to Little Caesars Arena to Michigan or Detroit-based businesses;

I’m all about running and have done my fair share, but $50 to run a 5k and get a t shirt and a medal is ridiculous (unless I’m missing where it’s a fundraiser).  And to have to pay $75 to get into the post race party?  Come on.

Freakin ran the Kzoo marathon for $75 and got…well, a lot more than a t shirt and medal.

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
