Octopus Thrower Facing A LCA Ban

from Dan Taekema of CBC,

Detroit Red Wings' superfan Nick Horvath smuggled an octopus into Little Caesars Arena with the hope of claiming his place in history. Instead, he's facing a lifetime ban.

Horvath and his buddies wrapped an octopus snugly around his stomach and concealed their secret cargo under a Gordie Howe all-star jersey ahead of the Wings' home opener last week in the team's new home. Every detail was carefully planned but everything went wrong when the eight-legged animal went airborne.

The octopus arched through the air and slid across the ice, eliciting a roar from the sellout crowd. The tossing of cephalopods has long been a popular pastime for Wings' fans but it's one officials frown upon.  Horvath hardly had time to celebrate before security guards grabbed the back of his jersey and whisked him away.

"The crowd was going nuts," said Horvath. "As they were escorting me out people were booing them, 'Let him go!' People were high-fiving me, giving me spanks on the butt, slaps on the butt ... everyone loved it."

This guy was directly below us. There were at least 2 octopi launched before him…he was the unlucky one who got caught.

The one he threw was a beast.  Thing was huge.

I knew something bad was up when I didn’t see Al Sabotka giving it a twirl, even in the tunnel.  The end of an era :(

They can’t fill the seats now and they’re going to ban someone who actually bought a ticket. Might want to reconsider unless PETA is going to buy about 20,000 tickets.

I love it. Lifetime ban. One more empty seat for Illitch to stare at and wonder what is wrong with the franchise.

With the new arena and all of the new revenue stream from bars/restaurants , perhaps they might consider opening a stand that sells pre-boiled ready toss octopi. I mean why not maximize every potential source of $$$. People are gonna toss them, assuming the team ever gets back in the playoffs, so you might as well make some money…..

Sure, maybe they can get every octopi sponsored too.

This octopus brought to you by GE!

And you could buy them from the Amway Octopus Market.

Chris Illitch proving he is less than his father in every way.

Yep Hoot, I am sure I am not the only noticing many of the official Wings tweets are sponsored by ....

Player to watch, game day talk.  I know there were sponsorships before but this year it seems to have increased.

Waiting to walk into the men’s room and this stall brought to you by ....!

However, I don’t know if I can blame Ilitch as much for it. Don’t forget that the league tried something like this before, leaning heavily on the city to arrest and charge any fan who lobbed octopi.

We have a new building *and* a new person at the helm. Granted, the thought that Ilitch is actually going along with this is upsetting, but the league does have a history of trying to stop our great tradition.

Yet the Red Wings, and the NHL used the octopus twirl in their own marketing.

The NHL doesn’t honestly mind the octopus thing.

Bettman does have a problem with it, and has since the Wings beat the Pens in the Cup finals thus depriving what Bettman felt should have been Crosby’s first Cup.

Tony Paul of the Detroit News,

Kyle Kujawa, a spokesman for the Red Wings, told The News on Wednesday, “It is not true that he was banned from LCA. He was ticketed and then released.”

This wouldn’t even be an issue if the Panthers fans hadn’t gone overboard throwing plastic rats on the ice. Then it started with catfish in Nashville.

It’s not like Security at the LCA (almost typed the Joe) are going to be on the lok out for this guy. Too many entrances. Just have a friend buy the tickets. They hardly looked at me when I went through just checked for metal and made sure my ticket scanned.

Anyone else notice that the Color Guard for the National Anthem before game 1 at the LCA was sponsored by somebody? Or actually, “In Partnership With” which is the same thing. Pathetic.
