The Malik Report

Number 5’s up where it belongs

Updated with a ton of video at 9:08 PM: Nicklas Lidstrom was given an African safari and a Dodge Ram quad cab (a diesel for Sweden) as his number was retired to the rafters of Joe Louis Arena this evening:

Lidstrom thanked Brad McCrimmon, Steve Yzerman, Scotty Bowman, Mike Babcock, the Ilitches, his teammates, his family and the fans, but in the end, he is a family man, and that's why he moved home to Vasteras to coach his sons' hockey team:

No tears. But close. And yes, Henrik Zetterberg looked like he was pretending to not be wearing a post-surgical back brace while wearing a suit, and Pavel Datsyuk was limping, but Datsyuk always limps, even when he's healthy. And Vladdie and Homer were the other heroes of the night.

The worst part, given that there were over 30 Lidstroms in attendance:

Update: The NHL posted avideo of the banner-raising:

Update #2: The Red Wings also posted Lidstrom's speech...

Let's do it chronologically. It went like this:

A Lidstrom tribute video...

Preceded the introduction...

Mike Babcock spoke...

Ken Holland spoke...

Lidstrom got his safari...

The gift presentation looked like this, too:

Chris Ilitch spoke, and Lidstrom got his Ram...

Then Lidstrom spoke--for 11 minutes...

And finally, up went the jersey:

I had to listen to the game on the radio tonight - I was stuck driving. Does anyone know where the #5 banner will be in relation to the rest of the retired numbers?

For whatever reason they’ve finally put the jerseys back in chronological order.

Fox Sports Detroit will also rebroadcast the ceremony at 7 AM EST and 6 PM EST on Friday night.

Sorry but I gotta gripe about last night, I love Nick, and I could not have been happier to be there, and be part of the night, the standing O for Vladdie and Nick going to the podium choked me up, great, but…

The Joe was about 2/3 full last night, and it made me sick to my stomach. The building should’ve been SRO, this is arguably the franchises greatest player, and it’s a 1/3 empty?  This is “hockeytown” please.  My row alone had 10 empty seats.  At the beginning of the ceremony, the arena was at best, and I truly mean at best, 1/2 full. Hey Hey Hockeytown… farrrrrttt.

The corporate sponsorship was overkill, and it cheapened the night in my opinion.  Do you really need to plug a bank over and over because they gave out banners? Can’t the wings just cough that up and skip them completely? And does a guy who made $10mln per year need a truck, that was 10 minutes I could’ve done without.  Does Illitch have to make money off of everything, why not put presented by Amway logos on Nick and his family too?

Holland’s and Chris Illitch’s speeches sucked butt. Babcock’s wasn’t’ much better, but at least it was short and to the point. Would’ve been nice to hear some passion from someone, why not have Homer go up there and talk for a minute?

Lastly, and I know this might stir some duce, but I lost a lot of respect for Yzerman, how does he not show? Really? I understand your with a new team, and have new responsibilities, but come on man, the guy was there for you, he was your teammate for a large portion of your career,  you weren’t having that much team success before he skated behind you, and you ho him out?  Federov Fetisov, these guys in a different country, non-stop flights Tampa to Detroit run 2x a day.
