Not Good Enough

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

Coaches love every-day players, guys who compete and battle and bring a consistent game-to-game effort.

It was apparent before Thursday that the Detroit Red Wings don't have enough of those players. Coach Jeff Blashill couldn't stress that enough following a 5-1 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at Little Caesars Arena.

"We had too many guys that weren't good enough," Blashill said. "Some guys have to learn what every night means."...

Blashill explained his decision to start Howard instead of Mrazek, who had played well his past three starts, including shutouts in Chicago on Jan. 14 and at New Jersey on Monday.

"I thought Petr deserved the start (Tuesday vs. Philadelphia). I thought he played fine the other night," Blashill said. "If I thought he played great, he would have had the start, but I thought he played fine. If you take the season in total, Jimmy's outplayed him.

"I hope ultimately they both play great. As I said before, we need great goaltending. We don't need good.

I cannot believe what I’m reading. How about some great coaching? That would be a welcome change.

Yes, Howard has been better than Mrazek overall this season. 100% true, no sane person could argue otherwise. However, Blashill said after the Philly game that each game will be a game by game decision as to who starts, not big picture. But then he admits here that he looked at the big picture to make the decision of who started against Chicago! This guy. Regardless of whether you think it was the right decision or not, the way he contradicts himself is hilarious.

Blashill is the true enemy of this team’s success, with Holland following right behind. I cannot stand this coach and his constant hate of younger players while giving older players a pass.

On the goalie situation, let’s look at some facts:

Howard has gone 0-4 in his last 4 starts where he posted an .889, .846, .900, and .667 save percentage. Yikes. Even with his .950 win, he is at .850 in his past 5 games.

Over the past 23 starts, he has gone 6-12-5, a .250 winning percentage and that is your “better” chance to win? Over that 23 game span, he had a .861 save percentage and that includes his 6 game span of .920, .935, .949, .974, and .950.

I’m sorry, but it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that, right now, Mrazek is your better goalie and better chance to win (if that is the objective). At this point, I’d just like for them to make sure they’re in the running for a top 3 pick.
