from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
The Detroit Red Wings aren't going to make a play for unrestricted free agent defenseman Wade Redden.
There had been internal discussions about whether Redden, 35, would help bolster the blue line in the wake of losing Nicklas Lidstrom to retirement and Brad Stuart via trade, but ultimately, management decided to stick with what's already on the roster.
The pairings shape up to feature Niklas Kronwall with Jonathan Ericsson, Brendan Smith with Kyle Quincey, and Ian White with Carlo Colaiacovo. Jakub Kindl is the seventh man. Kindl has a bit of a pulled groin and is day-to-day, but Colaiacovo has healed enough from a sore shoulder that he will play Saturday at St. Louis.

1991 Wings Defensive Roster: http://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/DET/1991.html
Rick Green - 65 games played
McCrimmon - 64
Yves Racine - 62
Bobby Dollas - 56
Steve Chiasson - 42
Djoos, Houda, Norwood, Marsh, and Crossman - between 17 and 26 games
Better hope Kronwall doesn’t go down with an injury for an extended period let alone he and somebody like Quincey, White or Coliacovo. This could end up being a real clown show on the blueline.

It’s likely to happen to a few rosters, tho. Mynguess is not a lot of NHL d-men played in Europe, and they are probably at highest risk to get hurt early. Anyone without substantial depth could be in trouble. Nashville, for instance.

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
Not what I wanted to see, but there’s no point in getting exercised over the 5th 6th dman composition of the roster, and that’s all Redden was going to be anyway.
As long as they are healthy (big, huge if) Redden wouldn’t have had much of a positive impact for Detroit. It when someone goes down and Kindl has to come in that the problems creep up.
