No Excuses Tonight

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

"There will be zero excuse not to win the hockey game tonight, zero," Blashill said following the morning skate Saturday. "We're going to have to play the way we played for the most part on the road. That's efficient, smart, simple hockey.

"Columbus played last night, we had good rest. Columbus, I understand, had some plane issues, we didn't. There'll be zero excuse not to win the hockey game tonight."

The Blue Jackets (9-7-1) are winless in four (0-3-1) following their 3-1 loss at home to the Carolina Hurricanes Friday. Mechanical problems with their flight prevented them from flying after the game.

"Us coming back from the road and travelling, I personally being young don't feel anything, but I think we've got to come out and be ready to play," Dylan Larkin said.

Must there always be an excuse? How about a simple explanation? For example…

-Columbus has more talent than us, at virtually every position
-Columbus is better coached than us, clearly
-or maybe in this particular game, Columbus gets more breaks, has more luck, benefits from an error by a referee, etc…

These are some things you can’t control. So instead of some juvenile declaration about having no excuse to lose, why not say there should be no excuse about our effort level or our preparation or disclipline. Those are the things you can control.

Another example of a coach who is in over his head…

Good for Blash setting an expectation.  Not everything he does or says needs to be spun into negativity.

Why exactly is this good? Serious question. Explain what is positive about this? It’s one thing to privately tell your team that you fully expect them to win tonight…but what is gained by going to the media and heaping expectations on the players? So if they lose- which may occur, and which maybe no fault of their own (ie lack of talent, bad breaks, hot goalie, etc…)- then the players are left explaining to the media what they did wrong. Are they allowed to say their coach or GM are morons? Didn’t think so.

So again, what is gained by going public with this “no excuse” garbage.

Did some “street” hockey myself with foster kids today - really “fills up my bucket.” Glad I get to close out my night with more hockey!
