NBCSN, ESPN drum up ‘Rivalry Night’ game between Red Wings, Kings

Tomorrow's game between the Red Wings and Kings (who are trailing 2-0 vs Minnesota, in St. Paul,as I write this) is an NBC Sports Network exclusive, and they're drumming up the "Rivalry Night" Game through a press release...

NEW YORK – April 23, 2013 — Henrik Zetterberg and the Detroit Red Wings (50 pts.) host Dustin Brown and the Los Angeles Kings (57 pts.) at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, Mich., on NBC Sports Network’s Wednesday Night Rivalry at 7:30 p.m. ET. The Kings, who are in fourth place in the Western Conference, have clinched a spot in the playoffs and are fighting to keep their home-ice advantage on the San Jose Sharks (55pts.), who are in fifth place in the conference standings. The Red Wings, currently ninth in the West, have lost six of their last 10 games, and need as many points as possible to keep their playoff hopes and 21-year postseason streak alive. Emmy Award-winning play-by-play commentator Mike ‘Doc’ Emrick, analyst Eddie Olczyk and ‘Inside-the-Glass’ analyst Pierre McGuire will call the game.

Coverage begins at 6:30 p.m. ET with NHL Live, NBC Sports Group’s NHL pregame show. Liam McHugh hosts NHL Live from Studio 2 at NBC Sports Group’s International Broadcast Center in Stamford, Conn., and will be joined by analysts and former NHL players Mike Milbury and Keith Jones.

“The defending Stanley Cup Champion Los Angeles Kings have already clinched a playoff spot and, just like last season, the team is continuing to get stronger at just the right time. Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard is playing playoff caliber hockey, but the rest of the Red Wings need to step up if they want to keep the team’s 21-year postseason streak alive. The Kings want to keep their home-ice lead on San Jose and the Red Wings need every point they can get to make the playoffs.”

“The Los Angeles Kings are playing great hockey, a robust brand that involves skill and speed. The Detroit Red Wings need every point to qualify for the Playoffs. This is a Game 7 during the regular season for Detroit, and goalie Jimmy Howard is going to have to be extra special. This is it for the Red Wings and the Kings know it.”

And, via RedWingsFeed, it appears that ESPN's going to make the game its "Game of the Week" as Barry Melrose previewed the game as well:

Yes, while we're at it, the Score's Justin Bourne has finally declared the Wings-Blue Jackets "rivalry" to be a "rivalry," too. "Oh, goody."

Another game center blackout for a BS marketing hype.

This is the second time the Wings and Kings have played a “Rivalry night” game this season.  I don’t get it.

It’s ridiculous how to really stretch the term “rivalry” just to maintain the “Rivalry Night” gimmick. For instance, the Bruins and Sabres and the Avs and Blues aren’t truly rivals. They should just not make “rivalry night” a weekly thing so that they can actually make a big deal of games that actually feature rivalries.

No one’s doing any favors for the Red Wings; the Kings didn’t and are unlikely to tomorrow, and from what I saw, the Wild didn’t beat them up even a little. The Blues are now almost impossible to catch. And the Sharks look like they’re trying to let Dallas win.

I think there are two big rivalries at the Joe tonight…they just don’t include The Wings & The Kings.

1) Subtle Interference vs. The Detroit Red Wings.  In this heated battle for a Play-off spot, will he be able to channel his hatred for the Winged Wheel into an Emmy winning broadcast or will his emotions overflow on the air with a profanity-laced tirade enhanced by his throwing pens towards the ice from the press-box?

2) Pierre McGuire vs. Subtle Interference’s Wife.  Who loves Eddie more?  While Mrs. Olczyk has all those years of experience loving Eddie under her belt and has already secured a place in his actual home, Pierre has recently penned an epic sonnet, detailing his feelings towards the Big O, called “Hey Eddie!” which has not only earned him extra late-season Eddie Time, but has also garnered him an invite to the 2013 Wordloaf Conference.  And let us not forget the tense Valentine’s Day incident which nearly became a restaurant-clearing brawl between these two teams…

Now THIS is a rivalry. Tell me any one of you can forget that memorable Stanley Cup final between the Wings and Kings in ‘49!

And as for as pure hate, can anything top that first-round battle between these two in ‘65??

Olczyk is an embarrassment! I absolutely cannot stand listening to any game he does much less a Wings game.

I am going to watch with my TV on mute tonight. Hopefully I can find the radio feed on my computer, and we can see how that works.
