via Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press this morning that he is working on signing a veteran and hopes to be able to use the defenseman in tonight's home opener against the Dallas Stars.
Holland didn't want to name the player until the deal is finalized. The contract has to be cleared by the NHL, and the player has to get to Detroit.

He isn’t even signed with them yet, last I heard they weren’t even close. Detroit could offer sheet him. Probably be about a 4-5 cap hit to pry him away from Montreal may get away with a 1st and 3rd for him which is plenty worth it considering what our last 1st got us. It’s a steal.

I’d lose so much respect for the man if he un-retired like that.
I would full-on kiss him on the mouth if he did.
You know, if he’d have me…

They would still have to clear space on the 50-man.
Joey MacDonald, Jordan Pearce, Max Nicastro. Plenty of room.

Any unsigned d-men who make their off-season home in Michigan?
Posted by Garth on 01/22/13 at 11:56 AM ET
Lilja cleared waivers and is in Adirondak, so it’s not him. Probably Campoli if they can get him here fast enough.

Just have to throw somebody on ST/LTIR, then they are off the 23 man requirement. If Coliacovo’s gone for a few weeks it’s him.

The problem there is, when Colaiavaco comes back, what happens?
There would be 8 Ds we cant move down, right?

That bridge is way off in the distance.
But when we get to it? Waive Kindl. If (when) he clears we can afford to stash him in the A and have his contract count against the cap, no worries.

Sure. Detroit would just waive somebody and send Lashoff down, or they’d trade someone up on the roster for a 5th or 6th to clear the spot.

Probaby rather have Eaton than Campoli.
Honestly, yes, I’d take Lilja over either, but he’s not a free agent.
Can Subban play on a signed offer sheet before Montreal has decided whether they want to match it? Damn, didn’t think so.

Shit, I saw that little bastard out on the ice with a match and a can of gas. Kids gonna wet the bed as much as he likes to play with fire.

Why would any defenseman be waived? THen the new D-man gets injured, and we have to sign another ghost or go along with a Founier?
Colaiacovo, Kindl, Ericsson, and it was just two games. On offense, Helm, Bertuzzi, Mursak, Samuelsson, Filppula and Emmerton were injured on Europe… On a season like that, you just don’t dump or waive any assets unless you absolutely have to.

Colo, Kindl or E-52 aren’t real assets, they’re just warm bodies. E-52 has been given all the time and space to fulfill his “upside” and we’re just never going to see it, cause it’s just not there.

Added to the post, Wings signing Huskins and Sammy out tonight.

Guy has been positive the whole career.. Dont think I’ve ever noticed him play, though…
He looks like a defensive defenseman from the stats, which might actually be exactly what we need?

Their warm bodies are better than Almqvist or Founier’s bodies. And seriously, 99% of the Wings fanbase didn’t notice the big improvements on Ericsson’s play?

I agree, everyone keeps bashing him, but it seens he moved past his days of blumpers
He’s at least a decent player now, I think… Only with no offensive smarts whatsoever, but at least he seens focused on defense, for a change

Same here…
... however, just because I noticed an improvement doesn’t mean I think he’s worth his salary.

Ericsson, I thought, looked great against St. Louis. He and Smith easily stood above the rest but held their own against St. Louis as well. He really used his body and just looked really engaged.
Herm, the only reason we’d have to waive one is because of the amount of 1-way contracts and the fact we aren’t sending Smith and his 2-way back down again. We already have 6 1-ways before Huskins, he makes 7. When whoever gets back from injury we’ll have to move one of those 1-way contracts whether by trade or waive. If we waive, Kindl is the least likely to be picked up and the least likely to impact the D with his loss aside from Quincey but Holland would never.
