via Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,
General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press this morning that he is working on signing a veteran and hopes to be able to use the defenseman in tonight's home opener against the Dallas Stars.
Holland didn't want to name the player until the deal is finalized. The contract has to be cleared by the NHL, and the player has to get to Detroit.

Does this mean we can get rid of Q?

Your lips to Ken’s ears… but no. We’re stuck with that contract for the duration. Kenny’s not going to give up a #1 and then admit it was stupid to do so by turning around and moving Q for far, far less than a #1.

I would not be surprised if it’s Lidstrom. Normally there’d be a “yada yada’s agent’s been in talks with GM Ken Holland”
Signing a veteran D man who he wont talk about who’s good enough to jump right in a make a difference at the home opener?
I’d shit my pants if he really did it, but something about this makes me think it could be him.

No way Lids comes back this week after flat our saying no 2 weeks ago, just not his style.

No way Lidstrom’s doing it. Not after one horrible game defensively and one lackluster game defensive. I’m sorry, but I’d lose so much respect for the man if he un-retired like that.
It’s Lilja. Looks like I’ll be pulling my #3 jersey from the closet tonight.

Zqto, Try TSN, broken down by conference, looks pretty current.

Maybe Mark Streit’s going to come out of retirement.

Some people have mentioned Kubina who is playing in Europe or Colin White who was released from his PTO with the Blues when they signed Redden.
Holland wants the dman tonight, so I doubt it is Kubina.

I’d be pissed if we got Campoli.
Did Doug Murray sign with anyone?>
Posted by HockeytownOverhaul on 01/22/13 at 11:18 AM ET
MTU, that list players who will have UFA status on 7/5/2013. Although some on that list are not playing, some are.

Hey, there’s another oldie there on the list.. Lebda
Not many other names I recognize, though

On the other hand, why should Holland stop at signing just one d-man?

Bob Duff tweet,
Some available UFA D - Chris Campoli, Mark Eaton. Brett Clark signed with OKC #AHL; Jurcina, Kubina in Europe.

Btw, how many of the wings current D have 2-way contracts?
They would need to send someone down, when (or IF) we get 8 (or 7?) healthy Ds again, right?
Might be a problem on getting a veteran on contract?
Posted by Zqto on 01/22/13 at 11:33 AM ET
@bezukov fifty man limit
Posted by mtuwingsfan on 01/22/13 at 10:24 AM ET
Good point.

Chris Campoli looks like Brenden Smith and Kyle Quincey had a baby
Posted by HockeytownOverhaul on 01/22/13 at 11:36 AM ET
Humm, checking cap geek, we have 6 Ds stuck on 1-way contracts:
Kronwall, Quincey, Ericsson, White, Colaiacovo, Kindl
If we get another 1-way contract, plus theres no way they will let Smith back to AHL, I hope, we would be stuck with 8 Ds… Is that possible with a 23 man roster?
Posted by Zqto on 01/22/13 at 11:38 AM ET
Maybe Kindl’s getting waived
Posted by HockeytownOverhaul on 01/22/13 at 10:36 AM ET
Or Quincy? We do have 2 buyouts, right? =D
Posted by Zqto on 01/22/13 at 11:39 AM ET
I think they realize how shotty this defense is with our main 6 including smith’s 2-way and putting Kindl in for an extended period of time is DANGEROUS. If Colo’s down for an extended period we def have to sign a vet and I think Kindl gets waived once all the 1-ways are healthy
