McKenzie explains how Danny DeKeyser’s representatives will weigh teams’ offers

Updated 5x at 3:23 PM: Over the last 24 hours, the Free Press's Helene St. James (having spoken with Ken Holland) MLive's Ansar Khan (having spoken with Jim Nill) and the Satellite Hotstove basically dissected the Danny DeKeyser sweepstakes, but TSN's Bob McKenzie posited a pair of Tweets which summarize what we've heard will take place at Newport Sports Management's offices in Mississauga, ON starting on Tuesday:

The Detroit connections are obvious--DeKeyser's from Clay Township, he went to school with Jim Nill's son, Trevor, and Grand Rapids Griffins coach Jeff Blashill helped recruit DeKeyser to Western Michigan University...But I've heard "Wings and Lightning" from the start, and with money being equal here (each and every one of the NHL's 30 teams can offer DeKeyser a "rookie cap max" deal, and nothing more), it's really DeKeyser and Don Meehan's calls as to which team presents DeKeyser with the best opportunity to play NHL hockey ASAP and over the long haul.

Update #4: Hmm...

Update #5: I hope so:

Update #5.5:

Update #5.75: Ha ha:

I really want this kid on the team. But I get the feeling we’re in for a letdown.

I feel like it’s become a thing for NHL teams to hype up any sort of defenseman with some degree of talent. Seems like true franchise defensemen are rare these days. Any guy who looks good will get lots of attention, like Ryan Suter did last year. We didn’t need him, and it’s a good thing we didn’t pay him what he wanted.

This college kid doesn’t put up a ton of points at that level. We have several promising players coming up (and that includes players like Smith and Kindl who are showing promise right now).

And we’d have to get rid of some combination of White, CC, Huskins, maybe send Lashoff down…seems unnecessary.

Maybe the guy is better than Lashoff and we send him down, and that would be fine. But I feel like there’s a chance this guy isn’t as big a deal as NHL teams want him to be.

DeKeyser’s a very solid #3/4 defenseman in the Brad Stuart mold, but with more offensive abilities.

The issues is obviously the fact that these NCAA free agents receive the same treatment as a Suter or Parise because they can be had for only the price of their contract…

And if DeKeyser were to sign with Detroit, he’d get a look-see, probably with Huskins being waived, but he’d probably find himself in Grand Rapids when all’s said and done.

Which I’m sure he knows and will probably be the reason he signs elsewhere. That’s cool though…Cola should be available to play a solid 3-5 games for the remainder of his contract.

And that’s why we won’t get him.  Not to mention saying they are confident they are the front runners meaning they’re probably overconfident and someone else will out work them for the kid.

I’ll let my opinions be made by other more omniscient types on here.  If they say he’s good, he’s good, if they say he’s bad, he’s bad.

This is kinda fun, not thinking for yourself smile

Ken, Mike and Mike need to walk into the room with the boy, put a check down on the table and hand him a pen.

An the keys to a snowmobile.

And maybe a phone number to an escort company or two.

And maybe this:

Please, please, please make this happen Kenny.  You haven’t done a damn thing for years (except trade away a 1st rounder for 3rd pairing dman in Q).  I know he may be over-hyped but its something w/o given away something.  We already missed out on Schultz and Suter.

Wow.  A couple things need some attention here.  I don’t think anyone has the kid billed as a franchise dman.  Most have projected him as a #4 Stu type w/ better offensive skill.  Stuart was not considered a franchise dman during his time w/ the Wings (maybe when coming up w/ the Sharks though).  Second, what person in their right mind would say we didn’t need Suter?  Have you seen the Wings powerplay?  Have you seen the defensive scheme Babs has employed just so things are so simple and the Wings don’t give up 5 goals a game?  Next, most college defenseman don’t put up large numbers because the style is much different compared to the CHL.  Smith and Schultz are the few exceptions to the norm recently.

And we’d have to get rid of some combination of White, CC, Huskins, maybe send Lashoff down…seems unnecessary.

Is this ^^^ sarcasm?  I defend White but just about everybody and their mother hates him.  Huskins is a journeyman depth dman.  Cola has the brittleness of a 90 year old woman not on Boniva.  Lashoff has potential but is struggling w/ rookie mistakes midway through the season.  There is nothing, absolutely nothing, by him taking one of their spots.
