Lidstrom Will Play In Alumni Showdown Against Toronto

added 10:08am,

Detroit, MI... Four-time Stanley Cup champion and seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nick Lidstrom has committed to play in the 2013 Maple Leafs vs. Red Wings Alumni Showdown™ on Tuesday, Dec. 31 at Comerica Park. Lidstrom joins many former teammates who will take part in the contest, which is part of a series of games that leads up to the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic® between the Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, Jan. 1 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Lidstrom spent his entire 20-year NHL career with the Red Wings, serving as the team’s captain from 2006-12. He finished his career as the franchise’s all-time highest scoring defenseman, racking up 1,142 points (264-878-1142) in 1,564 games. In addition to his role as a cornerstone on the team’s blueline for its championships in 1997, 1998 and 2002, he became the first European captain ever to hoist the Stanley Cup in 2008. He sits second in franchise history with 183 points (54-129-183) in 263 games, as the Red Wings never missed the playoffs during his career.

Originally drafted by Detroit in the third round (53rd overall) of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Lidstrom holds the NHL record for most regular season games played with only one team. He was also the first European-born and trained player to win the Norris Trophy (2001), the Conn Smythe (2002) or reach 1,000 points. He is a 12-time NHL All-Star, 10-time member of the NHL First All-Star Team, two-time NHL member of the NHL Second All-Star Team and is part of the exclusive Triple Gold Club with a Stanley Cup championship, a World Championship gold medal (1991) and Olympic Gold Medal (2006).

Fans can register for an opportunity to purchase Alumni Showdown tickets at a later date by signing up for more information at www.DetroitRedWings.com/connect. Additionally, up-to-date information and tickets for 2013 SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival™ events such as the GLI, OHL and AHL contests are available now at www.DetroitRedWings.com/2014WinterClassic.

Is Borje going to skate for the Leafs?

That would be cool to see Nick & Salming playing together.

DRD, Salming was scheduled to play in the now cancelled game, but nothing official yet from the Leafs on the roster for this year’s game.

Sundin was also scheduled to participate.

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
