Khan: the door is open for Daniel Cleary, but whether he accepts the Wings’ try-out is up to him

Via RedWingsFeed, MLive's Ansar Khan's confirming the Free Press's Helene St. James' report about Daniel Cleary:

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Cleary has an open invitation to join the team for training camp next week in Traverse City on a pro tryout, but with no guarantee of a contract. Holland hasn't heard back from Cleary, who hasn't indicated whether he will accept the invitation.

The 34-year-old forward is one of several notable unsigned free agents. Cleary turned down a three-year contract offer from the Red Wings just before the start of free agency on July 5.

The Red Wings value Cleary's abilities, leadership and versatility. But Holland has said the team would need to shed salary and trim three players before it could even consider signing him.

I say throw the “Buckets” out with the bath water. Sorry Charlie, you could have taken the original offer. We need to stick with the young-uns.

Lets Go Red Wings!!!!!

Im glad he didnt.  3 more years of Cleary is 3 too many.

what kind of GM in their right mind would offer 3 years.  what kind of idiot wouldn’t accept that

The kind of idiot who understands Holland is resistant to change and is loyal to a fault. I don’t blame Buckets for trying, but I’m glad a deal couldn’t be worked. Our overripe assets in Grand Rapids alone could beat a good chunk of the teams in the East. They need the roster spots before we lose more players like Mursak who know there’s just no space for them in this organ-i-zation. I’d rather have Mursak back than Cleary back. Mursak has a future, Cleary has peaked.
