Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson is out two-to-three weeks due to an injury, general manager Ken Holland said today.
The club did not specify his injury, but Ericsson hurt his left shoulder in Saturday's 5-2 loss at Phoenix. He did not play in Monday's 1-0 shootout loss to San Jose.
Defenseman Niklas Kronwall is practicing today for the second day in a row and expects to be cleared for Wednesday's game against the Ottawa Senators at Joe Louis Arena.
Until then, the Red Wings are keeping rookie Xavier Ouellet, who made his NHL debut on Monday.
Also on Tuesday, center Darren Helm left practice early. There was no immediate word on his condition.
Update #2: Helene St. James confirms that it's a shoulder injury...
General manager Ken Holland told the Free Press today that Ericsson is out with a shoulder injury.
Holland said Ericsson got hurt in Phoenix on Saturday. Ericsson waited until Monday afternoon to have an MRI exam in order to attend the birth of his baby girl.
Ericsson is a top-pair defenseman whose big presence will be especially missed on the penalty kill.
The Wings do expect to have Niklas Kronwall back in time for their next game, Wednesday against Ottawa, as he has had no symptoms since suffering a concussion Thursday.
As does the Detroit News's Ted Kulfan:
Ericsson missed Monday's 1-0 loss to San Jose because his wife was in labor. He was not on the ice again Tuesday, with Holland confirming the injury, which is believed to be a shoulder injury.
He has played in nine games this season with one goal and two assists and a plus-4 rating, while averaging 22 minutes 9 seconds of ice time.
The Red Wings could get defenseman Niklas Kronwall back soon. Kronwall who has missed two games with a concussion, is skating again Tuesday and could be ready for Wednesday's game against Ottawa.
Defenseman Xavier Ouellet, who was recalled from Grand Rapids in time for Monday's game, will likely stay with the Red Wings.
Update #3: Fox Sports Detroit's Art Renger reports that Ericsson's shoulder is dislocated:
