Khan: Johan Franzen hopes to be able to return to the Red Wings’ lineup on Wednesday

Today's Red Wings practice involved a surprisingly Tweet-free status until MLive's Ansar Khan posted the following:

Franzen was playing some of the best all-round hockey of his career prior to suffering that concussion in December...Here's hoping he gets the OK to go. The Wings will need him, and Stephen Weiss, too.

George; what do you think will be our center depth once play resumes? Pav, Weiss, Franzen, Helm, Glendening, Sheahan, and Andy can all play. Also, what happens with Jurco, Sheahan and Glendening? They’re obviously better players than Cleary, Bert, Sammy and Eaves, but we have crazy salary cap problems to navigate through in a few days.  What do you think will happen?

I think it’s a bit of a mess. Datsyuk is your #1 guy as long as he can go at 80% of what he was pre-injury; then you want Weiss to assume your second-line center’s spot and Helm to play on the 3rd line.

At this point, I believe that Sheahan and Jurco will stay up over Glendening and Eaves as this team can be pretty starved for offense, and I would imagine that if Andersson plays, he’ll be shifted to the wing. Samuelsson will doubtlessly be sent back down.

The cap issues are alleviated by placing Zetterberg and his $6.08 million cap hit on the LTIR. That should give the Wings some wiggle room regardless of whether they make a deadline move or stand pat.

I personally don’t see Weiss or Franzen being at playing shape for a few weeks. Skating with team mates and being out so long will take some time.

Even Pavel will be below 100% for awhile at the NHL level.

Going to be tough to squeak into the playoffs, IMO.

This year has been a consistent injury after injury and still problems on the D Men.

Isles should be sellers after loss of Tavares but Vanek is not a viable solution.

Go Wings Go
