Ken Holland Speaks At Public Hearing For New Arena

from Joe Guillen of the Detroit Free Press,

A representative of the Ilitch family’s business organization vowed on Wednesday to support the creation of a neighborhood advisory committee to give input on a wide range of development issues related to the proposed Red Wings arena downtown.

The advisory committee’s structure and its responsibilities have not been finalized, but Gregg Solomon of Olympia Development of Michigan told members of the Detroit City Council at a public hearing Wednesday that the committee would be involved in issues such as parking, the arena’s design, vending and security.

“Olympia is excited to pledge to work with City Council on the creation of a neighborhood advisory committee,” said Solomon, whose company would operate the new arena for Red Wings owners Mike and Marian Ilitch....

Several others spoke in support of the project, including Red Wings General Manager Ken Holland.

Holland noted the team’s success and the downtown parades that followed the Wings’ Stanley Cup championships. Holland said Joe Louis Arena is outdated.

“We are recruiting and retaining talent and it’s important that we have a competitive facility in order to compete in the National Hockey League,” Holland said. “We need your support on this project to keep our team competitive.”

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
