Ken Holland On His Contract, Babcock, DeKeyser And The Season Outlook

from Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press,

"I've been here a long time and very proud, very happy to be a Red Wing," Holland told the Free Press. "I work for, I believe, the best owners in the NHL — passionate, committed. It's nice to know that ownership has confidence in me to continue to lead going forward."...

"I talked briefly to Mike yesterday; we exchanged texts. He's out west," Holland said. "When he gets back to town, at training camp, we'll sit down and talk. It's best that he and I talk about situation when we're face to face and both engaged in the conversation. So sometime in September, we'll talk."

More immediately, Holland is working on a contract for restricted free agent defenseman Danny DeKeyser. Holland said, "We'll find a solution. We like Dan a lot; he's been a real good, young player for us. The hard part is trying to find what's fair for player and for club. He's only played 76 games, but he's a real important part of our team. We'll get him done."...

"Our goal going into 2014-15 is, hopefully, we can compete with the top teams in the East, with Boston and Tampa Bay, and Montreal, which went to the final four. We've got a tough division. We're trying to compete for a playoff spot, be a contender.

Then next offseason when we ice the same team:

As I mentioned in the previous thread, by signing KFQ to a $4M+ deal, that set an inflated standard.  Given Dekeyser’s TOI and the critical times and situations he was entrusted to by the club he’s got to be thinking he’s worth at least that.  Without the KFQ contract he’d probably have been happy signing a short contract for $2-3M a year.

The implications and after effects of the KFQ contract won’t leave much for Alfredsson if he does sign.  If he can be healthy for 60-65 games I say sign him, after all he was the still the leading scorer last year, but he will have to be compensated with bonuses with out-year cap hits b/c of the KFQ amount.

DeKeyser will get signed. Alfredsson will get signed if he is healthy and still wants to play…but don’t worry, I’m sure there will be lots to whine about, regardless.

Never understood how the lions ( 57 years and counting without a championship) get less grief than the Wings get for a not unexpected drop off in their dominance after like 20 years of superior caliber play ???  confused

@ Down River Dan - because the Red Wings are supposed to make up for the utter failure of The Lions and the relative mediocrity of The Tigers and Pistons by having a legitimate shot at The Cup every single year - no matter what.

@RWBill - in a recent article (pretty sure from Krupa), Dekeyser acknowledged the separation between RFA and UFA deals that have been signed during the offseason.  so Im not sure its a given that he gets KFQ money.

Good info.  If he cleared $4M already there isn’t a lot of room to go from there!

KH pointed out that DeKeyser’s got all of 74 NHL games under his belt, so either HSJ heard the Quincey salary demand from DeKeyser’s agent, Don Meehan, or the captain of the diggers is making an educated guess.

He’s only played 76 games

Plus 7 playoff games. The issue really shouldn’t be about experience, but more value to the team for what he does. He clearly leapfrogged some veterans in the depth pool with his quality. I hope this is not a bridge being burnt.
