Ken Daniels Talks Wings

Ken Daniels joined Sportsnet's Hockey Central at Noon show and the interview started off with some Bill Peters talk but quickly turned into Wings talk.

Worth a listen as Daniels joined Jeff Marek, Doug MacLean and Brad May.

The link takes you to the full podcast but the Daniels segment starts at the 15:45 mark.

The fight that Brad May was talking about.  I was in stitches as May was telling that story.

Good Lord, that was just a bunch of PR about “how great the Red Wings” are.

- MacLean said that when either Babcock or Holland talks, everyone listens.  Marek remarked that the Wings are basically, “Hockey University” and they’ve graduated good people to work for other organizations.  Yzerman in TBL and Nill in DAL.  Probably why Holland is pretty tight and grinchy with his allowing other organizations to talk to Wings personnel about open positions on other teams.  Kings’ Lombardi is doing the same after losing Hextall to the Flyers when he promoted John Stevens as his Associate Coach.  When the Wings hired Renney, he was immediately the Associate Coach, right?

- MacLean thinks Mike Johnson of the Portland Winterhawks should head up the Canucks.

- 34 coaches had change teams in the last three years.

Ken Daniels pretty much just confirmed Cleary’s getting a contract.

Re: Cleary, meh, so long as he gets a two way contract we’re fine.  Stick him in the AHL and call him up when we get the usual 8 injured forwards.

Yeah, let him take an AHL roster spot away from a young guy, and he can be called up instead of some who can actually skate.

There was a time when giving someone your word meant something.  I for one am glad that he orginization I root for still believes in that.  That being said, however, I am not happy that they gave Cleary their word in the first place, but if it’s a two way contract then not much harm is done.  If he proves he can’t compete then he’ll ride the bench in the AHL.  If he surprises everyone and shows he’s not done yet, then we can call him up as needed.
