Just Terrible News, Michigan High School Hockey Player Dies In His Sleep Due To Enlarged Heart

from Kyle Moroney of Mlive,

Hours before he was supposed to lead a team into the MHSAA semifinal ice hockey tournament, Grandville High School's hockey team co-captain Ryan Fischer passed away, according to school and MHSAA sources.

Ryan, 17, was found unresponsive in his home early this morning, school officials said.

"From my understanding, (Ryan) went to sleep last night. There were no symptoms, no warning signs. He was unresponsive when his father went to wake him up this morning," said Grandville Superintendent Ron Caniff.

Just awful.  Awful that this stuff can happen with no warning.

I know I’ve talked about it before, but we nearly lost my football-playing HS senior nephew this fall to blood clots.  These kids are normal seem fine and healthy, and then boom… something rears its ugly head and you may or may not get a chance to help them.

Where did you see the “enlarged heart” but, Paul?  The MLive story, even updated, still cites causes unknown it seems.

Awful news.

I am heading down to Plymouth tomorrow morning, as Sault High is in the final game, but this certainly puts a damper on things.

Hopefully something classy and dignified is done for the family by the MHSAA in this terrible time.

That’s really sad.

Not to lecture any of you, but having found my best friend after he died of this a few years back, I’m a pretty big proponent of getting an echocardiogram.

There was a huge outpouring of support today for the Grandville team from the entire West Michigan area. Fischer’s parents even attended the game, a game Grandville lost to Detroit Catholic Central.

At the end of the game, the Grandville team gathered together on the ice and knelt down to say a prayer. They were immediately swarmed by the Detroit Catholic Central players who surrounded the Grandville group, kneeling down with them and joining in their prayer. It was a classy, classy thing to do – just what you’d expect from hocky players.
