The Malik Report

Jordin Tootoo still a fan favorite, ‘good guy’ in Grand Rapids, as illustrated in stick-giveaway vid

I tend to post the Grand Rapids Griffins' videos as a matter of course, so I stuck this little ditty in the Griffins-Abbotsford Heat 1st round preview post, and since that time, Jordin Tootoo's kind gesture's "gone viral":

Good on ya Toots.

Anyone know the story of how the kid got to be on the bench?

Part of me wishes he was playing tonight. We need someone to start pissing off the Bruins and this is why we hired him.

Problem is, we have one Tootoo, they have 5+ guys who will mix it up.  Those aren’t odds worth pursuing.

Wings aren’t losing games ‘cause they can’t mix it up. They’re losing because they can’t sustain pressure, possess the puck, and score goals. None of which Tootoo helps with.

They said that about Draper, Maltby and McCarty. They seemed to do well during playoff time. Our currently philosophy isn’t working, why not bring in Toots who knows the playoffs and it suits his style. Sure he isn’t a goal scorer but he can grind away and really nobody else is scoring either. Doesn’t hurt trying a different approach.

Too too forechecks hard.  Finishes checks.  Especially on Dmen.

Anybody who criticizes Tootoo for lack of skill is underestimating his ability to impact a game. I don’t care if he is the only one on the Wings who will hit and grind. He does it and does it well. Right now, his heart would be a lot bigger than many of the guys on our team.

Exactly.  I find it funny that everyone is going on about Detroit needing to play Detroit’s game, yet now some people want Tootoo in?  The reason he hasn’t been playing in Detroit is that he doesn’t “play Detroit’s game”.  Hell, even last year when he played most of the regular season he was mothballed for the playoffs.

They said that about Draper, Maltby and McCarty.

Right.  If there’s any current player I would compare Draper’s and Maltby’s games to, it’s Jordin Tootoo.

We have such a great time watching Tootoo play in GR. All the kids and most of the adults just love him. We met him at a season ticket holder event, and he just lights up when he gets to talk to the kids and sign something for them. He seems like a great guy, and he has had such a positive impact on the Griffins this year.
