Jimmy D’s post-script

The Island News's Scott Harrigan's interview with Red Wings VP Jimmy Devellano's been tossed around like a hot potato, with each and every person who's re-listed it treating Devellano's inflammatory comments regarding players as "cattle" who are generously allowed to graze at the owners' "ranches," his allusions to collusion on NHL owners' parts regarding offer sheets and his, "There there, little fan, it's all too complicated for you to understand, but we'll 'get it fixed,' and then you can bring your money back to us" attitude, so I suppose it should come as little surprise that player agent Allan Walsh--who may be Devellano's polar rhetorical opposite--offered a post-script from Devellano via Harrigan:

Given that both sides are accusing the other of never really negotiating off their first proposals, and that contempt for the other side's position is boiling over, why do I get the feeling that the potential cancelations of the Hockeytown Winter Festival (per the Detroit News's Ted Klufan) and/or the Winter Classic itself (per the Toronto Star's Kevin McGran) are the least of our concerns?

I don’t understand why anyone would think that there is going to be NHL hockey this year at this point.

It took a year for the owners to break the players last time.  It will take at least a year for the owners to break the players this time.

My guess is that by maybe January or February the NHL will start spinning up a plan to have replacement players to open the 2013-14 season, occasional details of which will leak out to the media.

This isn’t going to be like the 2005 smackdown of the NHLPA.  It’s going to be worse.  They’re going to get obliterated.  Nuked from orbit, their atoms will be scattered across the cosmos.

Fehr is a tough, savvy labor negotiator with metric bleeptons of experience in big time deals… but he’s bringing a Pez dispenser to a gun fight.  Labor stoppages only work when they can threaten the owners profit margins.  Given the state of most NHL teams’ finances, that’s not really at issue here.

They are screwed.

Jimmy D has never been a favourite of mine.  The game has passed him by but the person who I am surprised at that let this happen is Illitch.  Mr I better do some damage control with Jimmy D if not maybe Illitch isn’t as great as we all thought?

Pretty sad comments, again, from an employee of the best NHL franchise in my opinion.

If the little weasel with a forked tongue AKA Buttman cancels the WC in November, as he says he will, the season is gone.

I am in the players camp but don’t agree with them taking jobs from other players by playing for other teams.  Mostly as it is the wealthy players that are jumping ship leaving the lower paid NHL players, UFAs, etc to fend for themselves with no salary.
