The Malik Report

It’s an average Saturday morning…in which the Wings have to condemn a degradation of their logo

If you want to know the background surrounding this, Russian MIachine Never Breaks' Peter Hassett and Yahoo Sports' Greg Wyshynski delve into the subject, but the long story is that a group of "right wing" people have co-opted the Red Wings logo for the purposes of disseminating hate, and the Red Wings had to craft a statement denouncing the Nazis who stole their logo this morning:

In college, I had a poster on my wall with the slogan "Hockey Is for Everyone" in the living room, and it included pictures of Julie Chu, Angela Ruggiero and Anson Carter. I was introduced to hockey by a Korean-American and taught to play goal by my cousin and my mom. I hope that the Wings sue the crap out of these jerks.

Pardon my french but FÚCK NAZI’S and that whole group down in Virginia. Hope the wing’s take every legal action they can and break these bastards bank. I mean it’s 2017 how are people still stupid enough to think one ethnicity is really that different from another? It’s a shame that we havent evolved enough to realize that humanity is really just one race…the human race.

Wings are going to DESTROY this group.  They REALLY screwed up with that logo.  Clear cut case of trademark infringement.  I hope the members of this group liked owning stuff while they could, because once the lawyers for the organization are through with them that’s going to be a distant memory.

I know you’re not conservative, but this is obscure. You could say “alt right”, but you can’t say “right wing”.

Come on GM. If your going to go into something like this, don’t sum it up incorrectly. Despite what huff post tells you, alt right is far different than right.

Yes you can. Plus you could just condemn these c*nts instead of quibbling over semantics.  You really want to question someone for calling out fascists because of the language they use? Snowflake much?

Despite what huff post tells you, alt right is far different than right.

No it absolutely is not.

Sorry, but when some of the groups involved have names like „NeoNazi Daily Stormer“ and the „National Socialist Movement“, then there’s nazi shit involved.

Let’s hope they have to take turns picking up bars of soap in the prison shower

Fun fact: Not all people left-of-center gobble up everything written on sites like Huffington Post, much like not all people right-of-center gobble up everything written on sites like NewsMax.

At the end of the day, the one thing that defines this story is that a group of nutjobs protesting in Virginia are using the Red Wings logo, and the one thing we can all agree on is that we disagree with that use and hope the team can do something to further distance themselves and the fans from this collective of morons. That’s it. Let’s leave politics out of it, because really, politics has no place in this discussion.

Yes the alt right is totally different than normal conservative leaning people. The alt right people are insane. That’s like saying every Muslim person supports Muslim terrorists. Come on now.

Please do not turn this into a debate other than the use of the Wings logo.

It is Saturday, a beautiful day in metro Detroit so please don’t stir the pot.

Thanks and much appreciated.

Neither has happened in your case, are you sure you submitted it properly?

Now for the benefit of the more conservative of the posters here, I will declare first and foremost that I am a socialist and proud of it.  If you can’t abide by that, then you can delete me and you will not have to read my posts.

These jerks who co-opted the Red Wings logo are among the people who are trying to destroy this country.  It is most unfortunate that our current occupant of the White House will not condemn this whole genre of pariahs as they are supporters of him.

Racism and bigotry have no place in our society.  I was born in the South and live in the South, yet I will condemn these racists who attack our society.  You can call them alt.right or right wing; I simply call them racist swine.

“racist sw!ine” - hey, poor pigs have got nothing to do with this!

Seriously, let’s all do what we can - and, small as it is, I actually think posting here about this matters: to make it clear how sickeningly contrary this misuse and attempted exploitation of our team logo really is. And amen to the Wings legally and financially wiping out anyone, any group who tries to use the greatest logo in team sports for division and hate. To do otherwise would be a betrayal of all of the good people of Detroit and Michigan, all Red Wings fans. Safe to say, the organization knows what it’s logo is worth and will not allow it to be damaged by some of the worst in our society.

My earliest years were in downtown Detroit and I greatly appreciate - even though the backdrop of racial tension and division was present in some ways - having the early experience of being treated kindly by black and white Detroiters..Detroiters who had fled horrible dictators in the Middle East, Detroiters of all heritages.

We need to stick together as Americans now more than ever - whatever your party registration or favorite news source. Except the people who organize around exclusion and hatred and who promote and engage in violence against others: Neo-Nazis, Klan members, racial supremacists of all types. And the same goes for the “Antifa” fake ninjas who think it’s cool to call anyone they disagree with a “fascist” and OK to attack them on sight. Those people are ugly reactions to each other and essentially mirror images of each other. Peter Beinert has a great article in the Atlantic Monthly describing the recent history of these groups and how in their childish violence they empower each other - at the expense of our shared open civil society.

And I really take Alan’s point: let’s respect each other enough to realize that most of us are probably, whatever our party preferences, news sources or leanings, pretty heterodox and free-thinking people.

And thanks for posting this and giving us a chance to make our disgust clear.

Alan got it 100% correct with his post.

For those who decry what the idiots in Virginia did, I’d ask you this. Were you equally outraged when the Occupy Wall Street idiots trashed NY back in 2011 or when the radical left violently attacked conservatives in Portland back in May of this year?

Violence is never an acceptable form of “protest.” It doesn’t matter whether it’s perpetrated by the left or by the the right. But, sadly, it’s only declared a national tragedy when the idiots on the right are the perpetrators.

When it’s the idiots on the left, the MSM declares that they’re just a “fringe group.” If the idiots declare that they “represent” the far right, those idiots are labeled for what both groups really are – a**holes who represent nothing more than the lunaic fringe of their respective philosophies.

There is no debate.  The Red Wings logo is a legal copyright.  They not only have every right to take action they SHOULD.  *#$%@& these Nazi’s.  And *#$%@& anyone who thinks there is any way this is ok.  It is not.  It isn’t about politics.  It is about right and wrong.  It is what is moral.  These people are disgusting in so many ways.  Good on Detroit for standing up.  Good for the NHL for supporting the Red Wings.  And *#$%@& YOU if you disagree.  Sorry Paul, I have the utmost respect for you and your site but there is no way I will every stand aside to this hatred.

I would like to see the Wings file a suit, if they can figure out who to file it against. Do we know specifically who was using those “shields?”

But I fear that they won’t. They are in a tough spot. Filing a suit would send a strong message that this type of thing is not acceptable in a civilized society. But it would also keep “Winged Wheel as White Supremacist Symbol” in the public eye a lot longer than just letting this blow over.

For those who decry what the idiots in Virginia did, I’d ask you this. Were you equally outraged when the Occupy Wall Street idiots trashed NY back in 2011 or when the radical left violently attacked conservatives in Portland back in May of this year?

Regarding OWS—property destruction is not the same thing as murder. Let’s not equate the two.

Regarding Portland—you are either willfully rewriting history to make your point, or more likely, you just don’t listen to voices outside your comfortable sources. The city obviously leans heavily to the left in its culture and politics, and its Democratic mayor immediately spoke outwardly about the issue, especially in light of the fact that Portland has had a bit of a problem with containing protests. 25 people were arrested, including those that assaulted police officers, and they were all publicly named. This information is easily found with a Google search that will take you to numerous local news outlets. No information is suppressed here—these are mainstream sources like major network news affiliates and papers.

Also, again, nobody murdered anyone in the Mayday protests in Portland.

And come on, let’s be really frank. There is no equating the various groups of white supremacists that were down in VA this weekend with leftist groups protesting about labor rights (Mayday) or Wall Street impunity (OWS). In VA, we are talking about people that SELF-IDENTIFY AS NAZIS, fascists, Klan members, skinheads, and white supremacists. Our ancestors and their peers fought in a war that was a pretty big deal, where the goal was to stop Nazism and fascism—I think we collectively agreed sometime back that stopping those ideas at all costs was worth it. And similarly, black Americans fought through—largely with non-violence—the ideology of KKK members, skinheads, and white supremacists.

The stated views of these groups are specifically violent in nature. At best, they openly advocate for suppressing the basic human rights of non-whites, and at their worst they advocate for violence against and elimination of non-whites.

Every person in this country that believes in the supposed sacred principles espoused in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution should absolutely find the ideology and tactics of these racist “alt-right”  groups to be painfully offensive, and deserving of much more outrage than the mistakes and crimes committed by groups in the Mayday or OWS protests. They are not equitable—one is clearly, morally worse.

The group in question calls themselves the “Detroit Right Wings”, so that seems like a fair thing to call them.  The logo is also slightly modified, with the spokes of the wheel replaced with something like the SS lightning bolts.

There were deaths during OWS, including one person who was shot in the head. There also were numerous reports of rapes in the OWS encampments. So OWS was not a pristine movement led only by peace-loving individuals.

But my point is simply this. Both sides have resorted to violence at various times. Both sides are beyond despicable when they do that. But the right-wing assholes are too often painted as “representative” of those who have conservative beliefs. The radical left, however, are always painted as “outliers” who no connection at all to those with liberal beliefs.
