Holland Looking For Top-End Talent At The Deadline

from Gregg Krupa of the Detroit News,

"If we can do a legitimate trade to acquire a player that we think is a legitimate top-six forward, or a legitimate top-four defenseman, then we're going to look."

Pomminville has been streaky, but when he’s good he’s a very effective player.

Kenny’s kicking the tires on a Coupe de Pomminville?

I’d rather be kicking the tires on a Coupe de Vanek, but that’s just me.

Just think how great the Wings will be this year if they add Jason Pomminville.

Pominville doesn’t strike me as a catalyst kind of guy, he strikes me as someone you put with a Pav or Z.  We need another heartbeat in the top 6.  Competitor.  That may be Pominville, I don’t know his body of work, but he struck me as a F that doesn’t use his size.

Pominville would be a decent target.  He’s not a high end guy like Vanek, who I don’t think Buffalo ends up trading, but he’s hit 30 twice, most recently last year.  He’s a better player then alleged “power forward” Ryan Clowe.

That’s cause he’s only a buck 85

Pominville would be a solid addition. I’d rather have Vanek, he’s younger and has a better scoring touch. But I would love to get Tyler Myers. He is a young, defensively sound d-man with a scoring touch. Any of these three players would be huge for the Wings.

man i sure hope Kenny makes none of the bad trades most fans seem to want him to make.

i love how some of you actually mock the “prices too high” line when if you look at the league over the last several years, overpaying for average players is precisely how teams become perpetually mediocre and how GM’s lose jobs. but whatever… fans want illogical instant gratification for no particular reason. basically, trades for trades sake.

and I also love how so many people’s hypothetical trades end up with us losing only impending UFA’s and/or underperforming players you don’t like, yet we totally get the players every other playoff caliber team are coveting. I get living in fantasy land… but how do you actually criticize Ken Holland who has to make these deals IN REAL LIFE with other real humans. Some of you literally mock him for somehow not being able to make horribly one-sided made-up deals.

if he really can snag a Yandle or something, then fine, trade a stud prospect or two… but that IS what it will cost. None of this Franzen for Yandle business. Not reality. It’ll take Nyquist caliber prospects + high draft picks. If it’s not for a stud, it’s not worth doing.

Of all seasons, this is definitely one where we should probably stand pat, or if anything, try and get SOMETHING for Filps if we aren’t going to resign him.

Hey, look, you created a strawman. Cool.

I’m pretty sure you don’t actually know what a strawman argument is.  A strawman argument requires that a persons initial position is ignored in favor of a position they don’t have in order for a conclusion to be argued against this second, created, position.

My comment assigns no position to anyone and draws no counter argument to argue against it which means it is not, in fact, a strawman argument.

It is, however, a thought exercise.

Fuch - Holland won’t do anything at all.  Why bother even giving it a moments thought.

Because the position that Holland doesn’t make trades is a fraudulent one that ignores history.  As recently as last year he moved a #1 for Quincey.  And Holland has already added DeKeyser, so he’s made both a midseason signing and a midseason trade in direct contravention of your assumed position.

So, if Red Winger was wrong about you creating a strawman in your previous post, did you write this paragraph just to show Red Winger what an actual strawman argument is?

I’m wondering who Holland will sign this off season. Is Bret Lebda still around? Jason Williams, maybe? How’s about Uwe Krupp? Wait a second, I know. He sign Samuelsson to a big extension

Taking shots at the a GM for not signing a costly free agent while there was a salary cap crunch is pretty weak…remember the waive Leino because they had to make room for Mule cap hit—that’s a crunch.

So is complaining about going all-in knowing that Lidstrom and Stuart were leaving and it might be your last chance at making a serious run to the Cup.

I don’t get why everyone is asking for the Wings to be buyers rather than sellers. And I am not talking about getting Yandle (since JayBo is going to STL Blues)—if you can get that or a top 3 forward go for it. If not why not sell when the prices are high.

Kenny will trade a 1st for Quincey, who wasn’t proven and didn’t have a ton of upside left (if any), and ended up as a healthy scratch even at times.  But he won’t move assets to get a minute-eating, actual vet d-man, which is precisely what they need to play alongside Kronwall and would make a huge difference?

His idea of a “legit” trade apparently is someone falling into his lap on the ridiculously-cheap.  There’s absolutely nobody in DET’s system currently that is capable of playing alongside Kronwall on the top pairing, or will be in the next year or so.  But he’s not willing to pay to get anyone either.

Be afraid, Wings fans.

I’m not in the buyers category right now but I think Holland has jumped the shark for the following reasons:
1. Signing Samuelsson and Colawhateverhisnameis for 2 yrs
2. Leaving so much money in the wallet when there’s cap space
3. (because I can see into the future) Letting Flip walk for nothing
4. (because I can see into the future) Signing Flip for anything over 4mil
5. Doing nothing about losing Rafalski, Stuart and Lidas
6. Signing Tootoo for 2mil even though we desperately needed (and still need) grit
7. Signing Franzen to a lifetime contract because he had one good playoff run
8. Letting Hossa go. See above
9. Letting Happy walk for nothing
10. Trying to right a wrong by getting Quincy back

There’s more but the Founders Imperial Stouts are getting to me

Regher has been moved.  Bouwmeester has been moved. Smid signed an extension.  A lot of our targets are no longer available.  That reason alone may make Kenny sit on his hands until Wednesday.
