The Malik Report

From the Detroit News's Mike Martindale:
A director with the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association is suing the organization in Oakland Circuit Court, seeking to see financial records he claims will show mismanagement and inappropriate spending.
The hockey association is a statewide nonprofit corporation that oversees activities for 50,000 players and coaches and 2,500 teams across Michigan.
The lawsuit, assigned to Oakland Circuit Judge Colleen O'Brien, alleges the association has failed to obtain competitive bids for expenditures of more than $10,000; serves alcohol it paid for at group meetings; and provides credit cards to the executive board without oversight.
"I'm an unpaid volunteer and am not looking for anything but an opportunity to review records I feel I am entitled to," said Richard Rogow, who calls himself a former "hockey dad." Rogow has been a director with the association since 2006 and is District 4 chairman in Oakland County.
"I think this has the potential to be bigger than Kwame," said Rogow, referring to the pending corruption case against former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. "It involves millions of dollars and kids across the state This (lawsuit) is all about the kids. MAHA does a lot of good things, but I think some bad things, too. And if there is money to be spent, let's spend it on pucks and sticks and hockey scholarships — not hospitality rooms where people drink for hours or banquets where they give each other awards."
Parents pay about $35 a year for children to be involved in the group or to become members. Financial statements provided to 62 directors do not break down specific expenditures of about $1 million annually, Rogow claims.
Rogow alleges the group has rebuffed his requests to review financial records and that the association's executive director, George Atkinson, told him to submit his resignation or Atkinson would "begin the process to remove you." Atkinson could not be reached for comment Monday.
