Gustavsson took a few shots, then left the ice again.

I don’t despise those top two lines, but holy Hell, we need one of our centers to get healthy to fix that third line.

Bertuzzi-Glendening-Alfredsson

Slip Helm or even Weiss in there and there’s a small chance that line could create matchup problems.  As it is, I guess the hope is someone turns the puck over directly to Alfie’s stick in the offensive zone?

Fredo injured now, or just maintenance day?  And why call up a
scoring forward and play him on a checking line when they are still unsuccessfully trying to shoehorn Abbie, a grinder, onto a scoring line?

Because what this team obviously needs now is to be in tip top shut down mode.

According to Babcock, Alfredsson had some immigration issues that needed to be cleared up today, will play tomorrow.

Howard will start.

Pulkkinen looks like he’s playing the point on the Wings’ second power play unit, along with DeKeyser, Legwand, Tatar and Sheahan.

The point?  Really?  The guy’s got a Hull-esque shot and follow through on his one-timers and instead of getting him into the areas where he can stalk the slots on the PP and be available to shoot and he’s playing away from those areas?  nICE.

You guys kill me.  The Wings have about 739 forwards out injured, and you’re complaining about line combinations.

I mean, really… think about that.  We’re at the point where some Walleye might get a crack at NHL time soon if something doesn’t change…. and you’re complaining about line combos, like Babcock’s not just going to use the Line Blender 5 minutes in anyways.

If Sheahan plays with Tatar and Nyquist, I do not think there could be any excuse now not to put Alfredsson with Legwand and Franzen. Playing with other 2 skilled guys, Alfy can help a lot more than on a line with 2 grinders.. Miller/Abby/Glen is a good shut down line, no need to bury Alfy there.
Pulkinen as well as Tatar has a great shot from the faceoff circle, they should not be on a blue line on a PP. On the other hand Smith has a good shot from a blue line. I just think the players have to be put in situations where they can succeed the most.

Pulkinan has not played a game ever. Just like he did with every other kid, Babs will dip his toe in the water and then adjust accordingly. If the kid shows he can play and more importantly NOT hurt us defensively, he will be moved up in short order.

with that said, regarding line combos, I think it’s been pretty obvious over the years that Babs ideally believes each line should have playmaker/sniper/netfront retriever. While that’s not always possible when your lineup is utterly depleted, I think that’s the main problem with just moving Alfie up with Franzen and Gus. All of a sudden Franzen has to move back into net front position (which he was doing earlier in the year) when he’s the hottest sniper we currently have. Meanwhile, Abby is probably our best netfront/retriever guy making him a pretty good match pulling the piano for Franzen and Gus. You may disagree with that part, but at the least it’s probably smart to keep Alfie and Franzen separate in order to maximize those roof wristers from the slot, a specialty of both of them. It doesn’t make sense to have redundant skills on the same line. Only one guy takes the wrister… now you need a guy setting screens and trying to pound in rebounds. That’s hockey

i meant Legwand, not Gus… though I guess Legwand does change the equation. you’re still lacking a playmaker on a Leg/Franz/Alfie line though

You mean other than both Franzen and Alfie playing right wing, Babcock wanting to keep his two shooting threats on two different lines, with the kids on another, Alfie being dinged up and may not be able to handle 1st line defensive responsibilities, or Babs wanting him to focus on offense and not spend or wear defensively.

Pulkinen as well as Tatar has a great shot from the faceoff circle, they should not be on a blue line on a PP.

Most NHL teams play a collapsing box PK, so when the puck is low, the old days of having the Shanny/Hull post up isn’t open.  Watch the movement of the PP wings and most NHL teams utilize, the idea is to get the puck to the blue line point, he shifts to blue line center with the other “d” position, and opposite side forward on lane at top of circle, i.e. what you are asking for. Goal is shoot if lane and screen is available, or pull the top PK for check feed to the side he came from for a quick shot.  On the low end side, you want to use east to west, or board movement to spring open either the back door forward down low, or that weak “d” position for mid slot shot.  I doubt they will set up Toots or Poots from teh blueline.

Franzen was not a net front presense on a line with Leg and Gus, it was Legwand as you corrected yourself already.

Alfredsson is a great playmaker. You could easily see it in those 2 shifts he was getting with Dats. He just needs players to pass the pack to and those players are not Abby and Glen. Legwand is also an underrated passer and if I am lacking a playmaker on Alfy/Franzen/Legwand line, who was then a playmaker on Franzen/Leg/Gus line?
I just know we get zero from Alfy now and we have maybe 3-4 skilled guys left on this team and they have to be put in a position to help the team. Franzen, Alfy, Nyquist and Tatar and maybe Legwand are the most important players as they can create offense. Other 7-8 guys we feature now are complimentary players. They will do the same things no matter where they play.

Why not go the full thirty years of Ilitch if you want “woe is me’ to be your theme song? We had quite a few nice years before this streak started, you know.

I don’t know how this poor, poor franchise has any fans left with all of the misfortune we’ve had. Definitely more misfortune than any other team.

Worst of all we have our lines being drawn up by that idiot Babcock. Crap, we’ve got 8-10 folks just posting on this blog alone who are better judges of talent than Babcock.

It’s truly a mystery why such a poorly run franchise has any fans!

Should I put a /sarcasm tag somewhere? Was all of this too subtle?

8-10 looks a lot more like 2-3 people discussing the lineup to me, with fairly good points all around.

Would you rather have 25 Let’s go red wings posts? Get’em tonight boys!
