The Malik Report

I spotted an interview Red Wings director of European scouting Hakan Andersson had with Hockeykanalen.se in between finishing up a scouting trip to the World Under-18 Championships in Germany and his and the Wings’ amateur scouts’ other interest, the forthcoming World Championships in Slovakia, but…
It’s a video interview. In Swedish. So I posted an APB on Twitter, and hockey blogger Marie Hallman incredibly graciously offered to translate the main points of the interview. She explains its context, and she also says that she’s heading to the Worlds herself, which will mean some fantastic coverage and probable conversations with any Swedish Wing prospect participants!
Here’s her summary of the interview:
The thing on tv with Håkan… was an interview about how NHL scouts, managers and player agents are working during U18 world champs.
Håkan says that there are about 120-130 scouts and managers plus about 20-30 agents there to look at the players.
He also says that …
…. the U18 worlds is important for the draft but not important in the long run. If you love hockey just keep on working hard
… that this is an opportunity for a lot of the NHL-bosses, the high ranked management to see the European players for the first time and that he helps them to evaluate the performance in those games compared to the rest of the season.
…. Scouts and teams don’t discus players with each other except maybe at the hotel bar late in the evening (then he laughs so the last bit is kind of a joke).
…that U18 worlds is a good opportunity so weigh talents that the club is interested in against each other
…. That Detroit are looking at a big bunch of the Swedish players in the U18 worlds for example Jonas Brodin, Oscar Klefbom, Rasmus Bengtsson and “most of the defensemen”, plus forwards like Mika Zibanejad and Victor Rask … he says “it’s a lot of players”
… Swedish players might be hot items in the draft, he thinks a lot of Swedes will get drafted and says quote “about as many swedes as there will be players from the rest of Europe”
Many, many, many thanks to Marie for posting this, and keep her blog bookmarked because I’m sure we’ll hear a bit about Dick Axelsson and Daniel Larsson, among others, down the line.
