So glad there was a run on defensemen this year so the Wings could scoop up the Mantha Ray with their #1. I can easily see him as our top scorer in a few years.

FTR, DET lists 4 full time amateur scouts:

Dave Kolb, Sam Lites, Mario Marois, and Andrew Dickson

...and 3 part-time:

Marty Stein, Kelly Harper, and Len Quesnelle.

Jeff Finley is Chief Amateur Scout.

I only have a vague familiarity with the scouting staff from messing with hockey management sim games (where you have to use them to scout, and hire/fire them, so they are important), so I’m familiar with Kolb and Stein as having been there a while.  I know all the pro scouts.  Dickson came with Tyler Wright from Columbus and is new this year.  The other amateur names I’m unfamiliar with (North American anyways, I’ve known of all the euro ones).  I remember Moris as a player and had no idea Marois was even in the DET org, or when he got there.  Wikipedia says Marois *had* been with Carolina as an amateur scout.

There are NO press releases or notes online noting DET has hired him that I can find.  Looking just now he *is* listed as an amateur scout in the 12-13 media directory though, so he was around for at least last season and likely contributed to the Wings getting Mantha.

It would stand to reason though that Marois might be their guy in the “Q” right now, for obvious reasons.

I don’t know what McDonnell and Leach left behind when they went with Nill to Dallas, or their involvements with getting “Q” guys in the past few drafts.

There are some secrets in the scouting business, and I’ve found that the Wings’ front office “roster” can be misleading. Sometimes teams don’t want other teams to know that they’ve hired scout so-and-so and that he’s working for them now.

Nill wanted to scout the Q, and the Wings went after Gleason Fournier and Phillipe Hudon as part of that push, and I’d imagine that Frk was picked from the Q under Nill’s reign as a result as well. Mantha appears to be a Marois pick.

Very late coming to this. All I can say, Primis, is that you are working from an incomplete directory. “FTR” doesn’t cut it.

Amateur scouts, full-time, this season (and I suspect others were added after this with MacDonnell’s departure):

Hakan Andersson
Dickson
Finley
Harper
Vlad Havluj
Kolb
Lites
Marois
Quesnelle
Stein
Nik Vakourov
Ari Vuori
Tyler Wright
