Friedman (and St. James) on Athanasiou and Sheahan

Among Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman's "31 Thoughts":

8. When I was a teenager, my father used to get really frustrated at me. He’d say, “You’re really stubborn. It’s your best and worst quality.” (Sorry dad, nothing has changed.) Andreas Athanasiou is cut from similar cloth. Very determined, very rigid in his way. If anyone who is threatening to go overseas actually does it, he’s my bet. It’s been reported Detroit is offering just under $4 million (combined) on a two-year deal, but word is the one-year offer is significantly lower. What gives the Red Wings hope is that this has been out there for weeks, but he hasn’t jumped. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s heard from Team Canada. If he’s in Russia, he’s got a spot in South Korea.

I'm sure that Athanasiou is still considering taking the Ak Bars Kazan's petro-Rubles, but I get the feeling that Ak Bars want a multi-year deal, and that's a no-go...

6. We’ll do more stuff from the media tour in a little bit, but let’s look at some of the other current storylines. Sounds like Pittsburgh has re-ignited its search for another centre. Not sure about names. Have heard rumblings about Detroit’s Riley Sheahan, but not specific to the Penguins.

We keep on reading reports that Riley Sheahan's name is in trade rumors, but are the Wings really going to "give up" on him?

And, from the Free Press's Helene St. James:

Good God, I certainly hope so, because it’s either “give up” on him or overpay him. We’ve got more than enough guys the Wings should’ve given up on but instead overpaid.

Drain the swamp!

Sheahan is more of the same on this team.  He’s very soft and not particularly fast or anything else to offer so why not trade him?  I can’t believe the Wings didn’t unload him at the deadline for picks.  Because it looks like they could possibly lose him for nothing

“I am not negotiating against the KHL” - wow, bold words Kenny!

Now can you tell us who you were negotiating against when you blew $100M on Abby, Helm, Glendummy, and Dekeyser??

Very true. Chances are Sheahan will have a better season than last year. Maybe he will even score 3 goals after 40 games and then watch out, KH will not be able to hold himself. I see 5 years at $3.5 mil.

Trade Sheahan.
Sign AA.

It’s unfortunate that we come to a point where we potentially have to “give up” on Sheahan before we see a potential bounce back season, but this is where the team is.

It’s more unfortunate that Sheahan is even in the mix. With Glendening, Helm and Abdelkader under long term contracts there is no role for Riley Sheahan. He’s a third line centre who isn’t as good as Helm or Abdelkader or a fourth line centre who already costs more than Glendening.

I think ~200k is not a bad uptick to pay for potentially 10-15 goals instead of 3-5. smile

I have no problem with this statement. The cap mismanagement that has gotten us to this point, that’s another story.

I also have no problem with “giving up” on Sheahan.  Enviably he’s going to have better season that’ll tempt Holland into signing him for more money/term than he’s actually worth.  Trade him now, get a pick and clear some cap space for AA.

I would have preferred if KH gave up on Helm before signing him last summer. raspberry

I agree Steve. for as goalless as Sheahan was last season his term and length could be desirable to certain teams who are willing to take a chance on him bouncing back. It’s just what team needs a #3 center and what can the Wings get back for him right now? a 3rd? Trades this time of year often involve players and not draft picks. To trade Sheahan he’d likely need to be packaged with someone else getting another player(s) in return.

And it was all going according to the plan. Helm wanted too much money, he wanted a different role, he wanted to test the market. Capitals were interested, but then they traded for Eller. Still I believe Dreger said a number of teams are interested in Helm. That’s it, done deal, he is gone. And then boom, 5 years, $20 mil out of nowhere. And honestly I did not want him gone, not if he was signed at a reasonable rate, I just had a feeling KH will give him something crazy if he signs him.

George—- any time you mention the KHL, you use “petro Rubles” there. I guess it’s a fact that a lot of the money comes from the oil and gas industry. Yet, it is annoying to read. So my suggestions:

1. Stop.
2. Every time you talk about money the Red Wings are offering, please use the phrase “pepperoni dollars”. After all, this team is partially financed by “Hot-N-Ready”.

Cheers from a petro-dollars based economy (a.k.a. Canada).

Can’t wait for Sheahan to outscore Helm, Glendummy, and Abby this season.

OK. Maybe not Abby. HSJ said he got married this summer so…bounce back candidate!

Wings GM Ken Holland to Free Press re: RFA Andreas Athanasiou: “We’ve had lots of conversations ....I am not negotiating against the KHL.”

That’s 100% true. When it comes to AA, Holland is “negotiating” against himself and the ridiculously bad contracts he gave to Abby, Helm and Glendenning.

Right now, he’s offering last year’s 2nd best goal scorer just 100K per season more than Glendenning. That’s not an “offer.” That’s an insult.

So stop making AA the bad guy for trying to get what he’s actually worth, Kenny. Pull out your vanity mirror (we all know you have one) and look into it. Tell the guy you see there to quit being a hypocritical asshat and give AA the $2.5M per year that he deserves.

What’s really sad is that Holland will never do that. And he can’t do that because he was so G.D. bad at negotiating contracts in the past that he now has to actually care about the salary cap. And AA is the unfortunate one who has to pay the price so Holland can look like an actual functioning GM.

I’m so disgusted with the way Chris I is allowing Holland to decimate this team that I just can’t get excied about the upcoming season. And that’s a feeling I haven’t had about the Wings in a long, long time.
