Evening news: On LCA, Anthony Mantha and items of note

Of disparate Red Wings-related note this evening:

1. Ahead of Little Caesars Arena's venue-opening shows by Kid Rock, Fox 2 reported that finishing touches were still being put on the arena, which is one of the reasons that the Wings' players practiced at Joe Louis Arena until this week (shh!):

2. Crain's Detroit Business's Bill Shea gave an interview to Michigan Radio's Stateside program regarding the funding for Little Caesars Arena;

3. From rink to players, the Hockey News's Jared Clinton penned a list of sophomore NHL players to keep an eye upon:

Anthony Mantha, Detroit Red Wings: After an impressive year in the AHL in 2015-16, Mantha failed to make the team out of training camp last season. It was a surprising decision by the Red Wings, especially with the team’s clear need for young talent. But Mantha was undeniable in the AHL, spending the first month in the minors putting up eight goals and 10 points in 10 games. It made him a clear candidate for a call-up and he got it in early November.

Mantha was excellent from that point onward, too. From the time he was brought up to the NHL to the end of the campaign, Mantha was the Red Wings’ fourth-highest scorer, registering 17 goals and 36 points, and he finished third in goals despite playing at least four fewer games than every other player ahead of him. His natural goal-scoring ability was evident, and he’s only going to get better with age and more opportunity. He has the ability to be a first-liner this season and get starts with the first power play unit. With a full year under his belt, he could be a lock for 20 goals.

4. In the FYI department, part 1: The NHL Network will air the Red Wings-Bruins preseason game at LCA on September 23rd;

5. In the FYI department, part 2: Red Wings free agent try-out Kevin Fiala was just named the captain of his Saskatoon Blades, per Saskatoon's CJME;

6. In the FYI department, part 3: Former Grand Rapids Griffins captain Nathan Paetsch tells the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle's Leo Roth that he couldn't resist coming home to play for the Rochester Americans:

Paetsch has played the past five seasons in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He and his wife have two young children, Kellen, 6, who has started school in Spencerport, and Mira, 4.

“My family and I are so excited, this is home for us and to be able to come back and be part of this organization again just means the world,’’ Paetsch said. “Family is everything now at this point in my career and this ultimately, by far, was the best situation.’’

So unless the wings made some kind of trade that hasn’t been announced yet, I’m pretty sure you have the wrong Fiala…

I can’t wait for Mantha to be in the K next season. He’ll be challenging AA for the scoring title.
