Dueling reailgnment banjos: Bill Daly, Donald Fehr take to the airwaves

We’ve talked quite a bit about the realignment issue as discussed by the Red Wings’ players and management in measured, reasoned tones, with both sides offering rational arguments as to why the NHL’s plan should or should not have been adopted by a “drop dead” date of January 6th without all the players’ concerns about increased travel and unbalanced conferences yielding playoff disparities addressed.

The CBC’s Elliotte Friedman revealed that Niklas Kronwall and the Red Wings’ PA members actually voted to go ahead with the plan, and, again, both sides offered very understandable and general BS-free comments about the contentious issue.

Today, however, the gentlemen who posted one press release which sounded like somebody made Geoffrey Fieger very angry, and another which dispassionately but thoroughly explained why the people taking the blame for this issue chose the “nuclear option,” with NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr, respectively, speaking to The Fan 590 about realignment.

I’m not going to post any annotations regarding the comments made by “Der Kommissar” or “Don’t Fehr the Reaper,” and instead, I’ll suggest that you listen to Daly’s comments to The Fan 590’s Brady and Lang this morning…

And I’ll ask you to please judge the respective levels of bullshit, posturing and pandering made by both gentlemen on your own—keep in mind that it is entirely possible, if not probable, that one or both of the gentlemen tell blatant lies to the Fan’s radio hosts for the sake of winning the PR war—and, if you wish, to please share your opinion as to whether either man’s interview changed perspective on the issue, or whether you think that either man spoke like an adult or, as the media did this past weekend, like small, spoiled children who are stamping their feet and calling the other side “doo-doo heads” in front of international audiences for the sake of engaging in temper tantrums.

I heard bill daly on Sunday afternoon on the Sirius/Xm Home Ice channel.

If the interview, and I use that term loosely, hadn’t told me he was speaking to daly, I would have sworn that it was lil gary himself.

Almost the same droning tone in his voice as gary, and the same condescending attitude.

Look, I don’t unilaterally support either side in this confrontation, but it is so tiring to listen to representatives of the NHL and how the league is NEVER on the wrong side of ANY issue.

As much as pains me to say this, but if a protracted labor battle and (ugh!) another “lost” season is what it takes to see gary/bill and their cronies shown the door, then I say give em hell Fehr.

My best description of Daly is that he is literally, in terms of his physical stature, demeanor and words, Bettman’s strong man, the arm-twister and intimidator who has the heavy presence which the little Chairman—who I’m starting to think is more Kim Jong-Il instead of Chairman Mao—lacks.

I don’t unilaterally support either side per se, either, but I lean toward the PA because they at least explain their actions. The NHL is not only “never wrong,” but it also becomes furious if you suggest that, say, floating the Phoenix Coyotes for years and years is anything less than a sound and rational business practice, for example.

I don’t think that Gary and Bill are going anywhere soon, but Fehr at least gives the NHLPA someone who is as willing to politely and eloquently explain his and his players’ rationale as much as he is willing to drop the gloves and fight dirty behind closed doors.
