Via DetroitHockey.net’s Clark Rasmussen and RedWingsFeed, Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard did speak to Piet Van Zant after his blocker hand took a ding from a collision with a Canucks player during last night’s win,
but I’m not sure whether this Twitter post from Aaron Ward is accurate
[edit/update: I obviously owe Aaron Ward an apology here as he was on this first and was spot-on]:
Report out of Detroit that Joey McDonald has been called up.Jimmy Howard sustained a hand injury in the win over Vancouver last night. #TSN
We’ll find out whether this is true over the next hour or two. Here’s hoping that if this is true, it’s nothing more than a broken fingernail.
Update: Oh boy, per TSN’s Darren Dreger:
Word is Jimmy Howard has a broken pinkie, should be out about 2 weeks or so…
Update #2: Make that oh sh**, per ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun:
Following up @aaronward_nhl and news on Jimmy Howard injury. It’s suspected Howard suffered a broken finger. #TSN
Update #3: Make that two games, per the Red Wings:
RED WINGS RECALL GOALTENDER JOEY MACDONALD…Starting Goaltender Jimmy Howard Sidelined with Broken Finger…:
Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced that goaltender Joey MacDonald has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. MacDonald will serve as Ty Conklin’s backup tomorrow night when the Red Wings take on the Edmonton Oilers at 10:00 p.m. ET (FOX Sports Detroit, CBC and AM 1270). Detroit ’s starting goaltender, Jimmy Howard, suffered a broken finger on his right hand during the third period of last night’s 4-3 shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks. Howard will miss the next two games of the Red Wings’ current four-game road trip and will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Detroit on Tuesday.
MacDonald, 31, has appeared in 26 games for the Griffins this season, compiling an 11-11-3 record, 2.63 goals against average and three shutouts. The Pictou, NS, native has played in 87 career NHL contests for the Boston Bruins, New York Islanders, Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Wings. MacDonald appeared in 15 games for Detroit last season, posting a 5-5-3 record with a 2.58 goals against average and one shutout.
The Free Press’s Helene St. James, the Detroit News’s Ted Kulfan and MLive’s Ansar Khan are confirming.
Update #3: From St. James:
#RedWings goalie Jimmy Howard broke right finger during 3rd period Thursday. Conklin to start against Oilers
...
On upside: This is opportunity for Conklin to show he can be reliable backup if needed. Deadline for trades is Feb. 27

If anything this will give Conklin or McDonald a look before the deadline.

Not that I’m pleased by this, but this is the best way for him to get a brief rest right? I mean, this won’t linger. Breaks tend heal cleanly—this is orders of magnitude better than a ligament or a hammy or gods forbid back issues.

So that’s why he went to the bench last night…
Jobu, go easy, please.

so, it comes down to, do i want to win the next two games and feel good about conk, or lose the next two in hope that we get a new back up goalie by the 27th eh?
choices, choices.

I think that’s AT LEAST two games… he’s being “re-evaluated” when they get back to Detroit, so there’s a possibility (probability?) he’s out for longer.
This is make or break time for Conklin.

LEBRUN: ... The Wings officially say Howard will miss two games before being re-evaluated when the team returns home from its road trip. A source told ESPN.com Friday morning that he might be out two weeks or so. Either way, it doesn’t sound too serious.

Well at least you didn’t sugarcoat it. ![]()

Amazing that he was hurt in the third period but stayed in the game for the duration, including OT and the shootout.
This is not good news, obviously, but we should be grateful that it’s not something really serious.
Definitely an opportunity (the word I’m sure Babcock will use) for Conklin to show the team what he’s got.

Next 4 games against Edmonton, Phoenix, Edmonton and Anaheim. The timing could be far worse. Not to mention 6 games at home in a row after this current trip. Not good but definitely not rend your garments bad.

I think it’s also a good opportunity to see what this team is like without its MVP, as it could affect the type of moves Holland might consider making at the deadline.

BOHICA comes to mind.
Pucker up and let’s hope 2 games isn’t 2 weeks.

The Wings new what they were getting with Conklin and his stats are close to last year. So I don’t see him turning into a real backup overnite. If Howie goes down for 2 weeks that is 5 or 6 games, I think. I still wonder how Nittymaki feel through waivers? Hope Conkilin does well, but not expecting miracles!

No, I think they assumed that he would return to the form he had when he was in Detroit in the 08-09 season.

Obviously assuming back to 08/09 was a gamble that hasn’t worked out yet. Hope he does well but his performance last year and so far this year doesn’t leave me feeling optimistic. On Hollands behalf there wasn’t much left in the off season, after Vokoun and others signed else where last year. Not sure Holland will do anything unless Howie is out long term and Conks and Joey fail. Will see how it unfolds!

NOT the time to panic…

Well unfortunately in this case Holland was pretty narrow-minded because I remember that rumours had them on the verge of signing Conklin long before they actually ended up signing him.
It seems like it was only ever going to be Conklin, unless Ozzie decided not to retire.
