Detroit’s Penalty Kill Has Been Good

from Ted Kulfan of the Detroit News,

Looking at Thursday’s NHL statistics, the Red Wings’ penalty kill has dropped to 10th at 82 percent, after being in single digits for a lengthy period of time. But it’s been a brief slip.

After killing five of six Jets power plays, and doing so during crucial points of the game, the Red Wings again showed how effective their penalty kill can be.

“Our (penalty) kill has done a real good job,” Blashill said. “When teams get time to set up in the zone, they generally get some (offensive) chances. But we’ve done a pretty good job on the forecheck, and our killers did a real good overall (Tuesday).

“Our kill, actually, has leaked out of the top 10, but it’s actually been real good.”

Blashill didn’t want to see his penalty-killing unit on the ice so much against the Jets. But, in the end, it was the Red Wings’ who had the edge in special teams.

What is nice to see if Detroit at the top of the Short handed goals. Thanks Larkin!

weird. HR has them with 2 more goals for (79) but ranked 24th. Espn has them with 77 goals ranked 24th on the team page but ranked 22nd on the team stats page. Both sources for team stats have them at 25th for goals against but team page is 23rd. hockey ref also have them with one more goal against. huh?

If there is a discrepancy, it might be whether or not they’re counting shootout wins/losses as goals for/against.

PK has been good. The combo of Larkin and Glenny usually stands out. They can make a rush to the other end, get a decent shot on, and then are speedy enough to get back in the d-zone.

PP has been just fine - even the much maligned z-nyq-tats-green-abby unit has been successful. I dont have numbers for that though.

5 on 5 play? As noted above, ehhhhhhhhhhhh.

Also, these improvements dont have us any better off in the standings. It gives more credence to the thought that 5 on 5 play is quite important in predicting success.

So despite much better special teams and much better goaltending and “bounce back” seasons form several players…we’re still close to the basement.

Paying attention Kenny? Your theory is failing!

Definitely one of your better points.

It really is telling that we have seen massive improvement in special teams, huge steps taken by the LAM, Frk, Glendening, Nyquist, and a marginal improvement to goaltending (Howard really isn’t much better than he was last year), we still are basement critters in the NHL. It’s almost as if our defense is still the issue…
