Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings front office is celebrating the holiday season this week by volunteering at two local charities, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan and Michigan Humane Society’s Detroit Center for Animal Care.
Assistant General Manager Jim Nill and radio play-by-play announcer Ken Kal will volunteer at Gleaners Community Food Bank’s Detroit distribution center from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Typical volunteer tasks include sorting and packing food or pulling agency orders.
“We’re grateful to have the support of the Red Wings Organization this holiday season,” said W. DeWayne Wells, president of Gleaners. “Without volunteers, Gleaners could not distribute food for nearly 100,000 meals per day. So, while we’d rather have Ken Kal in the broadcast booth, we deeply appreciate having him here along with his front-office colleagues.”
Former player Kirk Maltby will join Kal at the Detroit Center for Animal Care on Wednesday, Dec. 19, from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. to “Fill the Truck” with donations for the Michigan Humane Society’s Free Pet Food Bank Program, which is part of their Keeping Families Together initiative. MHS is asking supporters to donate unopened bags of pet food and straw, which will be distributed at no charge to pet owners of low-income households, in exchange for the chance to meet two Red Wings personalities. For more information, visit www.michiganhumane.org or call 1-866-MHUMANE, Monday through Friday, between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
“Every day, our lobby is full of people who love their pets, but have fallen on hard times and can no longer afford to care for them,” said Debby MacDonald, MHS Chief Cruelty Investigator and MHS Detroit facility manager. “Our free pet food bank program helps feed thousands of hungry pets every single year. That’s what MHS’ Keeping Families Together program is all about – helping those most in need, and keeping more pets in their loving homes.”

About The Malik Report
The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
