Detroit Red Wings Development Camp Roster

Updated with the schedule and more roster scuttlebut at 2:50 PM: From the Red Wings' public relations department:

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced the addition of 21 players to their development camp roster, including all eight players selected by the team on June 30 at the 2013 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Newark, New Jersey.  The total number of players now scheduled to participate in this week’s development camp stands at 38.  Anthony Mantha, Detroit’s first-round selection (20th overall) and a 50-goal scorer for the Val d’Or Foreurs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, highlights the recent roster additions.  Mantha is the grandson of Andre Pronovost, a four-time Stanley Cup champion who played 120 games for the Red Wings from 1962-65.

Zach Nastasiuk (48th overall) and Tyler Bertuzzi (58th overall), Detroit’s second-round selections at this year’s NHL Entry Draft, will also hit the ice in Traverse City starting on Wednesday.  Nastasiuk, a 6-1, 190-lb. right wing, collected 40 points (20G-20A-40P) in 62 games last season for the Owen Sound Attack of the Ontario Hockey League.  Bertuzzi (6-0, 178-lb.) registered 22 points (13G-9A-22P) in 43 games as a left wing for the Guelph Storm (OHL) in 2012-13. Tyler is the nephew of current Red Wings forward Todd Bertuzzi.  Four players originally scheduled to participate will not be in attendance: forwards Calle Jarnkrok and Mikhail Plotnikov, and defensemen Mattias Backman and Ben Marshall.  The camp roster now stands at 22 forwards, 11 defensemen and 5 goalies.

The Detroit Red Wings Development Camp is scheduled to take place July 10-15 at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City, Mich.  Fans wishing to attend camp can watch the first day on Wednesday, July 10, free of charge with tickets for the remainder of camp available for $5 per day.  Tickets will be sold exclusively at Centre Ice Arena.  The full roster of players set to skate in Traverse City can be found below.

Mike McKee...

Ben Marshall...

And Calle Janrkok and Mattias Backman:

Also: As noted by the Chicago Tribune's Chris Kuc, Jake Chelios is participating in the Hawks' summer camp. Dean took part in it last summer, so the Chelioses are getting the best of both worlds.

Be nice to get through this camp without reading the words “set back” anywhere.

So… why is Jarnkrok not in camp now?  Anyone have details?

Until he dresses and I see him at 100%, I’m going to remain doubtful and concerned about Helm.

Lets cross our fingers Helmer progresses here.

True that.  His (at least short-term) future could very well be determined by whether or not he holds up through the camp this week.

Pretty much what I was getting at, poor kid hasn’t been able to do $hit for a loooong time now.

Looks like one of the Russian invitees also dropped off the final version, the F Plotnikov.

Only one Chelios this year huh?

Jarnkrok not in attendance is a bit strange. Being traded maybe?

Don’t be worried about Jarnkrok. The Wings have always left him in Sweden to take part in strength training during the summer. He is THE TOP PROSPECT in the entire Red Wings system. I will eat my “Made in Detroit” hat if he’s traded.

Definitely interested in hearing your thoughts on Rasmus Bodin at camp George. The kid is huge and has intrigued me since last years draft. There is hardly ever anything about him online though. I know he’s a longshot, but wouldn’t it be awesome to have a Swedish giant skating around in Detroit someday?

George - The players I am most interested in hearing about are Mantha, Zach Nasty, (and the other 2013 draft class), Martin Frk, and goalie Coreau - and of course anyone that surprises you. Have a great trip!

Well, yeah, Ryan Sproul.  lol

Most of all, I’m interested in some surprises from the undrafted free picks from past drafts that were invited to this year’s PC.

Okay, for the record, Sarah Lindenau, TPL Hockey, Clark Rasmussen from Detroithockey.net, I and several other Wings bloggers have already inquired as to the statuses of the players who aren’t attending in Jarnkrok, Pulkkinen, Mike McKee and Backman and the rest.

We’re going to do the best we can to get answers over the next couple of days, but we may or may not get answers. It’s kind of a pointless endeavor to imagine bad things happening if they’re not attending—I know that Mike McKee was hurt toward the end of his season with the Lincoln Stars, Pulkkinen rode shotgun during the Griffins’ playoff run, and Ben Marshall has to pay his own way as an NCAA athlete, so he may not have been able to afford attending, or he may be taking summer classes, or he may be nursing an injury.

I also know that the Swedish teams have been more protective of their players of late, and regarding someone like Backman, Linkopings HC’s training camp will begin in either late July or early August, so they may not want to let him go up to a camp where he may get injured, and I know that, again, Jarnkrok’s always spent his summers taking part in strength training because that’s what the Wings want him to spend his off-season focusing upon. He may or may not have some commitments to Brynas IF to fulfill as well.

In other words, usually there are good doctor’s notes or teachers’ notes excusing players from participation, but there are many people on the case.

Since he’s attending WMU in the fall, Mike McKee is now bound by the NCAA rules just like Ben Marshall, right, George?

Posted by SYF from Twerkin' with Anastasia Ashley on 07/08/13 at 05:39 PM ET

George Malik's avatar

Yeah, McKee would have to pay his own way. That’s a big problem for all the NCAA guys, obviously.

Wait, when did Pulkkinen get added to this list of non-attendees?  Yeesh…

So… “Come see the team’s, prospects!  Except, you know, the ones you’re probably most-curious about because they’re the closest!...
