Depth is depth as Red Wings sign Pyett, Exelby to bolster Griffins’ lineup

Updated 5x with Gregg Krupa speaking to WBBL and Conklin rumors at 3:42 PM: The Red Wings have officially gotten to work building the Grand Rapids Griffins’ lineup. As Alanah already noted, the Wings have signed stay-at-home defenseman Garnet Exelby and prospect Logan Pyett, who is no longer waiver exempt, to one-year deals. The Macomb Daily’s Chuck Pleiness confirms…

The Wings have signed defensemen Logan Pyett and Garnet Exelby each to one-year contracts. Pyett has played the last three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins. He was selected in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft by the Wings in the seventh round, 212th overall.

Exelby has played 408 games in the NHL. Last season he played in the American Hockey League with the Rockford IceDogs.

As does MLive’s Ansar Khan...

The Detroit Red Wings have signed a pair of defensemen, agreeing to one-year deals with unrestricted free-agent Garnet Exelby and their own restricted free agent, Logan Pyett.

Both are slated to play for the Grand Rapids Griffins next season.

Exelby, who turns 30 on Aug. 16, is a good-sized, scrappy defender (6-foot-1, 215 pounds) with 408 games of NHL experience with Atlanta and Toronto. He spent all of last season with the Rockford IceHogs (AHL), picking up three goals, 10 assists and 128 penalty minutes in 77 games.

He played for the Maple Leafs in 2009-10, picking up a goal, three assists and 73 penalty minutes in 51 games.

The 23-year-old Pyett (5-10, 200) has spent the past three seasons with Grand Rapids, where he’s collected 21 goals, 45 assists and a minus-2 rating in 215 games.

And the Grand Rapids Press’s Michael Zuidema...

On Tuesday, the parent club Detroit Red Wings announced that defenseman Logan Pyett and Garnet Exelby were signed to one-year contracts.

Pyett, 23, has been a member of the Griffins for the past three seasons. In 215 games, he has 21 goals, 45 assists and 91 penalty minutes. Last year, he had nine goals and 13 assists in 74 games, with 38 penalty minutes and a minus-8 rating.

At 5-foot-10, Pyett is considered small for a defenseman, but he skates well and is solid in the offensive zone.

Exelby, 29, spent last season with the Rockford IceHogs, where he had three goals and 10 assists in 77 games. But he also has appeared in 408 career NHL games with the Atlanta Thrashers and Toronto Maple Leafs, and can give the Red Wings added depth at defense if it’s required. He has seven goals and 43 assists in his NHL career.

He also will add an element of toughness. Exelby had 128 penalty minutes last season, and has 584 in his NHL career.

And here’s the Wings’ press release:

…  Both Players Skated in the American Hockey League Last Season …

Detroit, MI… The Detroit Red Wings today announced that defensemen Logan Pyett and Garnet Exelby have both signed one-year contracts with the team. As per club policy, no further details on either of these deals will be disclosed.

Pyett, 23, has spent the past three seasons with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) where he has tallied 21G-45A-66P-91PIM in 215 games played. Originally selected by Detroit in the seventh round (212th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Pyett helped Team Canada win Gold at the 2008 IIHF World Junior Championships in the midst of a highly-successful major junior career during which he registered 273GP-49G-137A-186P-294PIM for his hometown Regina Pats. In his final season with the Pats (2007-08), the 5’10”, 200-lb. rearguard was named a Canadian Hockey League Second Team All-Star after leading Regina to a WHL East Division title while scoring 20 goals and dishing out 34 assists to finish with 54 points in addition to a +24 rating in 62 appearances.

Exelby, 29, brings over 600 games worth of professional hockey experience to the Red Wings organization, having previously played for the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL) and Toronto Maple Leafs (NHL) as well as the Chicago Wolves (AHL) and Rockford IceHogs (AHL). The 6’1”, 215-lb. blue-liner was selected by the Thrashers in the seventh round (217th overall) of the 1999 NHL Entry Draft and has gone on to register 7G-43A-50P-584PIM in 408 career NHL games. A native of Ste. Anne, Manitoba , Exelby spent the 2010-11 campaign with the IceHogs where he recorded 77GP-3G-10A-13P-128PIM to go along with a rating of +7.

Update: We’re also dealing with another rumor from “NHLGossip, who claims that the Wings have signed Ty Conklin. I cannot confirm this and must reiterate that it’s only a rumor at this point.

Update #2: Via NHL Gossip, someone found a Conklin player page on the Wings’ website which includes his stats from last season with St. Louis, so take that for what you will.

Update #3: For the record, @NHLSourcesSay? Incredibly unreliable.

NHLGossip? Ridiculously reliable, checks his sources and makes sure that the “gossip” is rooted in real, verifiable and accurate reporting. He’s someone I would highly encourage you to follow as he breaks stories very regularly.

Update #4: As noted by several commenters and Twitterers, the Conklin page is the kind of player profile you’ll find about any one of the Wings’

[edit/update: alums playing in the NHL], so it’s not as big a deal as one would think.

Update #5: If you’re interested, here’s the Detroit News’s Gregg Krupa speaking to WBBL’s Bakita and Bentley about the Wings’ free agency moves thus far:

Update #6: Per Capgeek.com, Pyett’s contract is worth $525,000 at the NHL level and $75,000 at the AHL level.

Wings roster page of the Conk doesn’t mean much..You can also find him on the blues (http://blues.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8469152) and Penguins roster pages (http://penguins.nhl.com/club/player.htm?id=8469152) with the same 10-11 stats.

Also on Oilers and Sabres.  Pretty much any player who has played for a team you can find a profile for with his player number id.

I have no clue as to what to make of the rumor. It’s a very possible signing but this @NHLSourcesSay guy, who got the Exelby rumor right, also makes a bunch of claims that never involves citing sources.

I can’t confirm it and I won’t say that it’s credible. It’s a rumor.

This would explain the confusion of Michal Handzus being on the Flyers’ website on the 1st.

If this rumor does happen to be true, I’d be a happy guy, that’s for sure.

I want Conklin back too!  I was sorry we had to let him get away two years ago.

Wow Kenny! First Commie and now Exelby. Who ya signing next Konopka?
I like the added toughness in those two signings. We need some ice cops.
Hard for me to get excited about our future backup goalie to be signed. Holland putting all hope into Howard and if he gets injured then the Wings are screwed because our likely backup signing will be a goalie making near league minimum and past his prime.

Trade for Bernier, Rask, Enroth or Schneider please. Surprise me.
