Daniel Cleary tells St. John’s Telegram that he ‘needs some time to think’

Last night, TSN's Darren Dreger Tweeted news that (possible?) former Red Wing Daniel Cleary had yet to determine his place of employment for the 2013-2014 NHL season, and the Saint John's (Newfoundland) Telegram's Robin Short asked Cleary what was going on--and he received a response:

After a self-imposed Sunday deadline to figure out to which training camp he will be headed to this week, Cleary said in a text message to The Telegram last evening he’s still not certain which way to turn.

The 34-year-old Riverhead, Harbour Grace product is an unrestricted free agent, and has made it abundantly clear his preference is a return to Detroit.

The Red Wings have also expressed a desire to resign Cleary — he was their second-leading scorer in the playoffs, and led Detroit with five points in the second-round series against Chicago — but the problem is the team has 16 players under contract, and plan to carry 14.

“This is a crazy today,” Cleary said via text. “I need some time to think here.”

About The Malik Report

The Malik Report is a destination for all things Red Wings-related. I offer biased, perhaps unprofessional-at-times and verbose coverage of my favorite team, their prospects and developmental affiliates. I've joined the Kukla's Korner family with five years of blogging under my belt, and I hope you'll find almost everything you need to follow your Red Wings at a place where all opinions are created equal and we're all friends, talking about hockey and the team we love to follow.
