Daniel Cleary news at 11: no decision yet, supposedly down to Wings, Flyers, Panthers

This has become quite the soap opera...

Here's Panaccio's article:

[T]he Flyers had discussed a one or two-year contract offer with his camp, although Cleary was seeking a third year. He is expected to make a decision sometime Monday night, a source told CSNPhilly.com.

Ask Detroit general manager Ken Holland about Cleary’s worth to the Red Wings and he’d tell you he was one of the “glue” guys that are so important for clubs to win a Cup.

That’s what the Flyers figure they would be getting for a 16-year NHL veteran who would join his fifth club. Cleary had been talking about re-signing in Detroit. His last contract saw his cap hit at $2.8 million. Reports also said Florida was in the mix.

If signed, Cleary would project to 18-20 goals and 40 points, given his stats over the past six full seasons (not including the lockout year).

Obviously, with the Flyers already $2 million over the salary cap, a trade would be necessary to lose salary.

Cleary is a tough-as-nails third liner, who might look pretty good with Sean Couturier and Matt Read. The down side to this, of course, is that some young player now won’t make the Flyers' roster -- perhaps Tye McGinn? And there obviously will be less ice time for younger players, as well.

It appears the Flyers want to protect their youth with a short-term deal, while Florida or Detroit might be willing to go much longer. Cleary, a source said, is waiting to hear from Detroit before making his final decision on a Flyers offer.

Remind me who we're talking about again?

Two months ago I wa glad Detroit didn’t re-sign him but I had sympathy.

Now I just want him to go th f*ck away as soon as possible.

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy would the Wings ever consider giving him three years?

I think we’ll find out he signs in PHI, and that DET and FLA never even seriously made a run at him even.
