Babcock Stresses Wings Are Getting Better, But…

from Ansar Khan of Mlive,

... Darren Helm skated in the second-line center spot at Friday’s practice, but Babcock said there is no chance he will play there during the game. Babcock also said he is not splitting up Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg, who have carried the team.

That limits their options.

“Our second line (isn’t) getting it done,’’ Babcock said. “Last night, let’s be honest, Pav and Z and (Todd Bertuzzi) won the game for us. We checked it right back (blowing a 3-2 lead late and losing 4-3 in overtime to Dallas).

“We did tons of great things; I went through it meticulously today. That’s basically what I told the players; let’s keep getting better because we are getting better. But we can’t shoot ourselves in the foot. There were just a couple mistakes. The amount of zone time Pav and Z and those guys had alone, they could have had five (goals).’’

The problem is, aside from the top line and Daniel Alfredsson (13 points), nobody else is providing offense. Weiss has just three points in 17 games. Both of Franzen’s goals came in the same game; in his other 12 games he has only three assists.

We need change. Less then a handful of guys scoring is a joke.

TIME FOR A WAKE UP CALL!

Let the waiving begin to remove some dead weight and wake up a few we decide to keep. Trades can’t be a serious option as what team would want to trade for someone currently doing nothing? And as we all know we don’t give up prospects.

my list of players who could go in some way or another

Gustavson
Smith
Quincey
Mule
Sammie
Eaves
Cleary
Miller

Play half of GR instead of these jokes. Why not grow your future and save some moolah

Yea I sort of agree. My list.
Sammie
Cleary
Smith (I would actually pay to move him)
Eaves.
I would keep miller and gustavsson. Mule too. Hes got a low cap hit I mean he will score 30 goals this season somehow. He always does… we need nyquist and for Gods sake get rid of smith and sammie and cleary. Quincey is iffy… any changes?

Send Tootoo down, waive Sammy to free up the roster spot, trade Mule and a pick for a defenseman and bring up Nyquist.

That’s a start.

Samuelsson has a 35+ years of age contract, meaning if he is sent down, Wings get no cap relief.

Time to bring up the Mantha Ray and put him on the 2nd line! The guy is averaging over 2.5 pts. per game.

I… I don’t even know how to respond to this.  This is a joke, right?  You’re kidding?

Without even getting into the rest of it all… you realize DET by rule cannot do that, right?  Junior hockey is not a minor league system where you just “bring guys up”.

At least we aren’t Oilers fans. They traded Smid and a goalie prospect for a couple players I never heard of to their hated rival the Flames and to boot the Oil signed Bryzgalov the guy making millions not playing for the Flyers lol.
Weiss points will come, not worried about him.
It would be nice if they started to finish more of their checks as a team though during games regularly since the defense is soft and the offense scoring one line show. If they have no interest in hitting puck watching strategy not a prudent road to success.

Gustavson  He provides two important roles to the team.
    1. He is proving to be a capable back up.

    2. He allows Mrazek to start in Grand Rapids instead of ride the bench in Detroit.

Smith  The team still see’s a lot of potential in him.  He may not be the breakout star the fans were hoping for, but it’s too early to abandon him.

Mule  They won’t do anything with him this season.  Unless he is somehow involved in a Trade Deadline deal.

Eaves, Miller, Cleary  All three come pretty cheap and are pretty much performing up to expectations.  They do all fill similar roles, so it is far to question if we need three of them.

Samuelson  I have some faint glimmer of hope that he can become some sort of a useful player, because we are stuck with him.

Mantha is under contract, they could call him up if they want to.  However, if he were to play more than 9 games, it would burn the first year of his Entry-Level Contract, pushing him a year closer to RFA, and eventually UFA, status.  The QMJHL is a long way from the NHL though, and gaudy stats like his aren’t unusual in that league.  There are a lot of players who are far closer to being NHL-ready in Grand Rapids, calling up Mantha would not be the best decision.

Yes, it’s early ... yes, Weiss will ‘get it’ eventually.  On top of playing less than 25% of the games last season, he has to come back to a team full of players he’s never played with in a system completely foreign to him.  He’s our #1 faceoff guy, his defence has been stellar ... the offence will come.

We need to realize, we’re not Edmonton ... we’re this close to being a very dominant team.  We have a few injuries, a young, mistake prone D, and a couple of important players coming back from long term injuries (weiss - helm). Once everybody is healthy and on the same page, this will be one hell of a team.  In the meantime, there are tweaks needed to plug the holes.

As for the 2nd line ... I’d play the guys that deserve to be there.  If Pav Z and Bert is your first line then Andy Abby and Alfie deserve to be the 2nd line while Weiss nurses his wonky groinage.

If Dale Talon wants to blow up the Florida roster then we can help him out.  Lets send him Sammy & Franzen $ Quincey and we’ll take back 2 of our draft choices (Fleischmann & Mathias) plus we’ll take Jovo off their hands.

Sammy gives them a veteran voice to guide their forwards and Quincey can do the same for the D replacing Jovo.  For us, it provides 2 younger forwards with scoring ability and another veteran defenceman to steady the D once Jovo’s healthy after hip surgery. He’s skating so it shouldn’t be long before he’s ready to go.

Monetarily, we’re sending $10.724 mil and getting back $10.375 mil.  so it’s pretty much a wash cap-wise.

Yeah ... we’re getting better ... but there are a few things that can be done to hasten the process.

All it takes is a willing trade partner.  If I’m Florida I would not want Sammy, Franzen and Quincey.
